Located in Slovenia , 7 km from the town of Novo Mesto . The first mention of the castle dates back to 1252.
The castle was built on a small island on the river Krka. The central part of the castle was built, most likely, in the XIII - XIV centuries. In the XIV century, the castle was surrounded by a wall, but in subsequent times the fortifications were dismantled. In the XVII century, the living quarters were rebuilt, and the palace chapel was painted with frescoes in the Renaissance spirit. In the summer of 1942 the castle was burned down by partisans and until 1952 it was not restored. After restoration, a hotel was built here. Now it represents a well-preserved example of Romanesque architecture.
Around the castle there is an English-style park and nearby there are thermal mineral springs Šmarješke Toplice (4 km), Dolenjske Toplice (20 km.)
