Site

Amalieu's house is located on Passeig de Gràcia ( Cat. Passeig de Gràcia ) in the Eixample district ( Cat. Eixample ) next to Casa Batlló and Leo Morera and is part of the “Disagreement Quarter” , so called because of the stylistic heterogeneity of the modernist buildings that form it.

History

The house, built in 1875, in 1898 was bought by pastry chef Antonio Amalie, and its reconstruction was entrusted to the architect J. Puig-i-Cadafalc. In the course of the work, in which a whole group of artists and craftsmen participated, redevelopment and decoration of the house was completed.

In 1976, by royal decree , the Amalieu house was declared a monument of national importance. On the upper floors of the building is the Amalieu Institute of Spanish Art ( Cat. Institut Amatller d'Art Hispànic ), which has an extensive library on Spanish art [1] .

Architecture

The building has an unusual stepped pediment , reminiscent of the works of Dutch Gothic, and the motifs of Spanish Gothic are noticeable in the design of the windows of the upper floors [1] . The gallery of the fourth floor is decorated with columns with delicate capitals . The delicate pink and sand color of the facade wall finish refers to the profession of the customer of the building. The sculptural decoration of the facade is mainly carried out by Eusebi Arnau y Mascort ( Cat. Eusebi Arnau i Mascort ). The main entrance is decorated with sculptures on biblical themes (in particular, the figure of St. George fighting the dragon) and plots of medieval legends; the allegorical images above represent music, painting, architecture and sculpture. An allegorical portrait of the homeowner is also located above the entrance.

The building has two entrances - the higher one was intended for entry into the lobby of harnessed carriages; between the front door there is an Amalie coat of arms.

Interior

The decoration of the lobby of the building and the main staircase is typical of the Catalan Art Nouveau - a combination of stone (columns), wood (ceiling), wrought iron (lamps), colored tiles (wall cladding) was used [1] . The courtyard of Amalieu's house is covered with stained glass.
