Classification

According to the Fossilworks website, as of September 2016, 3 extinct species are included in the genus [1] , as well as another one, according to IUCN :

  • Dusicyon australis (Kerr, 1792) - Falkland Fox [3]
  • Dusicyon avus Burmeister, 1866 [ syn. Canis platensis Mercerat, 1891 , Ducicyon avus (Burmeister, 1866) ]
  • Dusicyon cultridens Molina, 1782
  • Dusicyon sechurae Thomas, 1900

The species Dusicyon avus was distributed in the Late Pleistocene in southern Brazil , in the territory of modern Uruguay and Argentina and in the southern part of Chile, and became extinct about 1600 years ago, but it is likely that it became extinct 500-300 years ago. Dusicyon cultridens is known only from fossil remains in Argentina and lived in the middle of the Pliocene , from 2.8 to 2.6 million years ago. Dusicyon sechurae lived on the territory of modern Ecuador in the Upper Pleistocene.
