COFDM

STMicroelectronics STV0360B1R - COFDM demodulator chip

COFDM ( English Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing ) - orthogonal frequency division of channels with coding. COFDM is a type of OFDM technology that combines channel coding (abbreviation "C" from the English. Coded ), and OFDM . Channel coding involves the use of forward error correction (FEC), which is used to correct failures and errors in data transmission. Due to the transfer of excess service information, it is possible to recover lost data.

COFDM is well known and widely used in digital broadcasting systems ( DAB ) in Europe , Canada and Japan .

COFDM has established itself among TV program broadcasters as a new method of delivering digital signals to consumers. The main advantage of the COFDM transmission method is the use of multiple reflections of the emitted signals from buildings, walls, etc., with the correction of distortions and errors that occur during reception. The DVB European Consortium has adopted this transmission method as the basic standard for terrestrial broadcasting and multimedia production.

Technology Benefits

Benefits of COFDM Technology:

  • the flexibility provided by the ability to quickly change the data flow rate and transmission parameters depending on the propagation conditions of the radio waves
  • allows the transmission of high-definition programs with a sufficient margin of stability
  • provides flexibility in addressing coverage issues
  • allows reception in areas inaccessible to other systems through the use of single-frequency networks
  • hierarchical modulation ability
  • high image quality through the use of digital processing methods
  • high noise immunity
  • ensuring both sustainable reception and broadcasts in motion, etc.

All this served as an additional impetus for the widespread introduction of new technology in various areas of television production, as well as solving data transfer problems, for example, from on board crewless platforms [1] .
