Cornelis Witsen had a law degree and was considered an educated person of his time. He was a member of the municipality, the head of the East India Company . As a member of the Admiralty , in 1656 he was sent with a diplomatic mission to England to negotiate with Oliver Cromwell regarding the laws on navigation, in particular the Navigation Act [1] .
Several times he was elected mayor of Amsterdam ; in the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam there is a commemorative medal in his honor: on one side is a bust of Cornelis, on the back is the coat of arms of the Wiesen family with the motto “Candide et Cordate” (from the Latin “Sincerely and Prudently”) [1] .
