Hume, John

John Hume ( born January 18, 1937 , Derry , Northern Ireland ) is a former Northern Irish politician , one of the founders of the Social Democratic and Labor Party, winner of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize together with By David Trimble .

Biography

Hume was born in 1937 in the city of Derry (Northern Ireland). He studied at the College of St. Columbus and the College of St. Patrick, and then - at the Irish National University . He received a master's degree in art.

Hume became a founding member of the Credit Union. In 1969, he was elected to the Parliament of Northern Ireland, and the next year with his partners he founded the Social Democratic and Labor Party (SDLP). In 1979 he became the representative of Northern Ireland in the European Parliament ; in the same year he led the SDLP.

John Hume played an important role in the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement of 1985 , according to which Dublin received official consultant status in resolving issues related to Northern Ireland. In 1998, he participated in the signing of the Belfast Agreement (Good Friday Agreement) on the peaceful settlement of the Northern Ireland conflict [3] . In the same year, he and David Trimble received the Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland." In a 2010 survey, recognized as "The Greatest Irish."

In 2004, Hume decided to quit politics.
