History

The basement was founded around 1683 . In some sources [1] the village is referred to as the Epiphany (according to the church) and as the Ilyinsky Mountains.

Oikonym (name origin)

The existing name, as you can assume, is associated with the name of the area where the village is located, over which a mountain range (rampart) of the Volga Upland hangs from the north [1] .

The word "basement" is also used in marine terminology and in geography to denote a part of alluvial deposits in the river rolling area. The basement is the most difficult place when escorting ships through a roll. On the fairway , (navigable), after passing the basement, a zone of calm flow appears. [2] From the Podvalya to the “Russian Bektyazhka” in the middle of the Volga was an island with flood meadows and hayfields. The end of the island and a significant expansion of the Volga channel just opposite the village could be a “basement” in marine terminology [3] . Also possible is the formation of a common noun basement that existed in Russian dialects in the meanings of “ravine with crumbling edges” and “steep slope, cliff of an underwater sand ridge” [4] .

Current Description

In the 60s, a pier and a river port, possibly of strategic importance, were built in the Podvalsky Bay, called the " Podvaliee Refuge" (shelter of the stormy sediment of the fleet). In it, river vessels could shelter during a storm and cargo was transshipped. However, the port did not receive further development, and its practical importance was limited to the passenger marina and the function of asylum.
