USSR Football Cup 1979

The 38th USSR Cup was held in February-August 1979 . The winner of the Cup for the second time was Tbilisi Dynamo . The previous winner of the Kiev Dynamo Cup retired in the quarter finals. The tournament formula was again changed in this draw: at the first stage, one-round tournaments were held in eight zones consisting of 6 clubs. Zone winners met in the quarter finals. Again, all stages began to play in one match.

The matches of the zonal stages were held from February 28 to March 12 in the southern republics of the USSR: the Georgian SSR ( Tbilisi , Rustavi , Leselidze , Escher ), the Tajik SSR ( Dushanbe , Nurek , Kurgan-Tyube ), the Kazakh SSR ( Chimkent ), the Armenian SSR ( Yerevan , Artashat , Echmiadzin ), the Crimean region of Ukraine ( Simferopol , Yevpatoriya , Bakhchisaray , Pochtovoe , Belogorsk ) and the Krasnodar Territory of the RSFSR ( Sochi , Kudepst , Khost ).
