Viktor Ivanovich Ponomarenko ( August 5, 1915 , Pokrovsk - September 1, 2005 , Volgograd ) - a veteran of the Great Patriotic War , commander of a tank platoon, junior lieutenant . He took part in the liberation of Ukraine from the German invaders .

Biography

Born on July 23 ( August 5, according to a new style) in 1915 in the city of Pokrovsk , in a Ukrainian family.

He graduated from 7 classes of a comprehensive school. At the end of the school of FZU , he worked at a tractor repair plant as a tool fitter.

In 1937-1942 he served in the engineering forces as a sapper. He graduated from the Saratov Tank School in 1943 . Since January 1944, in the position of commander of a tank platoon of the 170th Tank Brigade (18th Panzer Corps, 5th Guards Tank Army , 2nd Ukrainian Front ).

On March 11, 1944 , having knocked out two railway trains at the Khaschevatoye station, Ponomarenko with his crew held the station for 20 hours, repelling the Germans' counterattacks, until reinforcements arrived. Having received a replenishment (two tanks), Ponomarenko attacked the enemy in the village of Khoshchevato. The fight lasted all day. The Germans fiercely resisted. Toward evening, unable to withstand the continuous blows of the tankmen, they left the village across the river. Ponomarenko was the first in the brigade to cross the Southern Bug , inflicting great damage to the enemy in manpower and equipment.

He continued to fight in the 170th Tank Brigade as a communications officer until February 1945 . He participated in battles in the territory of Moldova, Romania and Hungary.

In 1945-1950 he was the commander of a cadet platoon in the Saratov Tank School. Then he commanded a tank company, was deputy commander of a tank battalion in the Carpathian military district . In 1959 he entered the reserve with the rank of major .

He lived in Volgograd. He worked as a mechanic at the Volgograd Ceramic Plant until 1986 . Then he was retired.

He died on September 1, 2005 . He was buried in the cemetery of the Krasnoarmeysky district ( Volgograd ).

Rewards

  • On September 13, 1944, for the courage and heroism shown in the battles for Khoshchevato, the second lieutenant Ponomarenko was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .
  • He was awarded the Order of Lenin, two orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Red Star and medals.
