A life order may have arisen under John III ; Karamzin attributes its appearance to the reign of John IV . In his department there were livestock yards (warehouses) in which bread was stored for supplying the armed forces in case of war and crop failure. Little is known about the activities of this order. At the end of the 17th century, it was connected with the Streltsy order , and then replaced by the Provincial Chancellery , which mainly procured provisions for the army .
