Building Description and History
The complex consists of three four-story adjacent houses with a total of five entrances (according to the numbering system adopted in Kaliningrad, each entrance has its own house number). The first houses were built No. 73 and 74. The complex was built in 1900-1905 according to B. Kester. According to A. Gubin in 1888 . [1] Facades facing the street are divided by niches and pediments.
After the war, houses were used for housing, but in 1987 they were resettled for major repairs. As a result, houses began to collapse, gradually turning into ruins. In early June 2001, part of the ceilings collapsed, crushing one of the three men in the building (presumably illegally dismantling it into building materials) to death. After that, the city administration intended to demolish the ruins of the building, but under pressure from the public, they eventually put them up for auction. [2]
In 2002, the ruins of the building became the property of LLC Zhilpromstroy with the condition of restoration of the facade. On May 18, 2009, at a press conference, the chairman of the Kaliningrad Municipal Property and Land Resources Committee, Alexander Zuev, announced that by the end of 2009, a house restoration project would be completed [3] . However, no work was carried out at the facility.
On December 4, 2013, the head of the city, Alexander Yaroshuk, stated in the TV program “Main Hour” that the legal procedures for terminating the contract with Rossban, the owner of Zhilpromstroy LLC, were practically completed and there was a potential investor intending to restore the building to a hotel. [4] May 28, 2018 part of the building collapsed
