Sylar is a character from the television series Heroes , a serial killer who absorbs abilities with his innate ability: understanding how things work. To gain new abilities, he studied the brain of his victims, until he learned how to use his innate empathy for copying abilities (similar to Peter Petrelli's abilities). He justified his killings by saying that people are not worthy of the abilities bestowed on them, that this is natural selection. He was first found and revealed to him the truth about people with the abilities of Chandra Suresh , which is why Sylar became a murderer. Chandra called Sylar a “zero patient” in his research. Sylar is a pseudonym, his real name is Gabriel Gray .

Character Creation
Sylar was originally conceived as a cannibal, who ate the brains of his victims and got their abilities; however, to avoid associations with zombies, the writers described it vaguely. [one]
Before the first appearance of Quinto in the episode "Seven Minutes Before Midnight", the role of Sylar was played by an understudy in "Giant Leap", where the character's face was hidden in the shadows. [2] In the episode "Half a year ago," his face is still not shown, but Quinto has already played it. In the second episode of the first season, “Do not look back,” Sylar’s voice is heard in the recording of a telephone conversation on the answering machine Chandra Suresh, it was actor Maurice Lamarch. Part of this conversation is heard again in Six Months Ago, but this time Quinto spoke.
Character Story
Volume One
Chandra Suresh meets Gabriela Gray and talks about her research, thinking that Sylar has abilities. When Chandra is disappointed in him, not finding anything unusual in Gray, and chases him away, Gabriel finds the address of Brian Davis and kills him, taking his ability - telekinesis . He later demonstrates it to Chandra, Chandra admits that he was mistaken in him. Later, Sylar feels hungry because of his ability. When he seeks help from Chandra, he calls him a monster. Sylar kills him.
Mohinder Suresh learns that Sylar is involved in the death of his father from his conversations. Meanwhile, Sylar kills more and more people to get new abilities: he kills the Walker family in their home, then Charlie Andrews at the Burnt Toast Cafe. Sylar plans to take, in his opinion, the “most powerful” ability - regeneration, which Claire Bennet possesses. At Union Wells in Texas, Sylar didn’t manage to do this, as Peter Petrelli managed to save Claire. Having fallen from a height of five floors, he tries to escape, but Eden and the Haitian lie in wait for him. Eden uses his power of conviction and the Haitian lulls Sylar. Sylar is temporarily considered a captive of the Company at Primatech Paper Co. But he manages to escape, killing Hank and Eden McCain.
Posing as Mohinder Suresh, Sylar takes the power of Zane Taylor - the ability to smelt metal. Later, he himself is called Zane to join Mohinder. Mohinder reveals Sylar’s intention after he kills Dale Smither and takes her ability - super hearing. Mohinder tries to shoot Sylar, but Sylar telekinesis stops the bullet and picks up the special list. At this time, Peter Petrelli visits the apartment of Mohinder. Wounded Mohinder warns Peter that Sylar is in the apartment. After a fight with Sylar, Peter dies. Sylar is about to take his abilities, but Mohinder stuns him. Sylar comes to his senses and sees that the body of Peter and Mohinder disappeared, and with them the list with special people. But Sylar finds the coordinates of Isaac Mendez .
Sylar kills Isaac and gains his ability to paint the future . After he saw the picture in which he had drawn that he was taking power from Ted and blowing up half of New York, he realizes that he does not want to kill so many innocent people. Sylar returns to Brooklyn and visits his mother, Virginia Gray. She tells him that he can be anyone. This Virginia pushes him to terrible deeds. Sylar shows her what he can do, but breaks down and hurts her. Virginia does not believe that this is her son, and calls him a monster. Sylar asks for forgiveness, but his mother takes out a pair of scissors and tells him to get out. Sylar tries to take away the scissors from her, but accidentally sticks them into her mother's chest. He understands what he has done, and decides to follow the instructions of the mother to become a great man. At this moment, Hiro Nakamura and his friend Ando Masahashi come to kill him. But Hiro can't kill him, Sylar freezes and breaks Hiro's sword. Sylar later kills Ted Sprague and takes his ability to emit radiation . Sylar returns to the studio of Isaac Mendez and paints another picture, which depicts his battle with the resurrected Peter Petrelli at Kirby Plaza. But Ando bursts into his workshop and tries to kill him. Sylar easily copes with him and sees his demise in the comic brought by Ando. Sylar does not believe in it. Later, Sylar goes to Kirby Plaza and meets Peter with Noah Bennet . Maniac uses telekinesis to push Noah from the scene of the fight. Later, with the help of telekinesis, he is trying to strangle Peter, but Matt Parkman is shooting at Sylar. Sylar stops the bullets and sends them to Matt’s chest. Nicky Sanders , seeing Sylar beating Peter, hits him with a lantern torn out of the asphalt. Suddenly, Peter begins to emit radiation and is getting closer to exploding. On Kirby Plaza, the previously failed Hiro Nakamura is teleported and pierces Sylar's chest with a sword. Sylar, weakening, telekinesis Hiro sends to the wall of the building. Having finally lost all his strength, Sylar loses consciousness.
Volume Two
Sylar wakes up on the beach next to Candace Wilmer. She tells him that he underwent many operations after being injured and that the beach is an illusion created by her. Sylar realizes that he no longer has any abilities. After, Sylar is not held and decides to start re-gathering abilities. He kills Candace, but he can't take her ability. In desperation, he breaks out of Candace's shack and walks through a deserted area somewhere in Mexico. He is found by Maya Herrera , Alejandro and Derek, who are looking for Dr. Suresh to get rid of Maya's ability. Sylar tells them that he knows who Dr. Suresh is and promises to take them to him. Later, Derek shows Sylar the newspaper, which shows the faces of Maya and Alejandro, who are accused of murder. Sylar kills Derek and sets off with the killers. Maya shows him what she is capable of, but Alejandro saves Sylar. Sylar tells Maya that he was special and wants to regain his strength, so he also goes to Dr. Suresh. On the border in America, the way they blocked the border guards. Sylar tells Maya to use her ability. After crossing the border, Alejandro absorbs Maya's poison and saves Sylar, but attacks him due to the fact that he forced Maya to use his ability. Maya separates them, and Sylar, using the fact that Alejandro does not know English, tells him that he will kill them and take away their abilities. Alejandro finds information on Sylar on the Internet and finds out that he killed his mother. Sylar tells Maya that it happened by chance. Maya believes Sylaru. Later, Sylar helps Maya learn to control her ability. Maya tells Alejandro that she no longer needs him. Alejandro bursts into Sylar's room and makes a scandal. Sylar kills him.
When Sylar and Maya arrive at Mohinder’s apartment, Sylar demands that he return his abilities to him. Mohinder believes that the Shilti virus was introduced to Sylaru. When they arrive at the Mohinder laboratory, it turns out that this is indeed the case. Mohinder informs Sylar that he has the same virus strain as Nika’s, which means he was infected by the company. Mohinder gets a cure for this strain containing Suresh’s blood and Claire Bennet , which was intended to heal Nicky. Molly tells Maya that her brother is dead, Maya blames Sylar for this, which is why he kills her. Sylar requires that Mohinder, for a start, inject the medicine to her for testing, and he, seeing how Maya comes to life, takes the rest of the serum. At this moment Elle Bishop appears and shoots Sylar in a discharge, but he manages to escape.
Third Volume
Sylar injects Mohinder Suresh's antibodies and Claire Bennet's blood, which allows him to heal all the wounds and master his abilities again. Sylar attacks Claire Bennet in her house. Despite the active resistance of the girl, the serial killer catches her and opens the skull to obtain the ability of regeneration. After Sylar’s departure, Claire heals his wounds, but she realizes that Sylar is now more dangerous than ever. Sylar then penetrates the Primatech main building using stolen documents from the Bennett home. There he kills Bob Bishop - the head of the company and takes his power of alchemy. Trying to open the skull of Elle Bishop , Sylar experiences all her electricity, which also turns off the fifth level security shield, which is why all the prisoners run away. Sylar is locked into a vacant cell. Later, Angela Petrelli starts using Sylar, convincing that he is her son, whom she was forced to give to a foster family. She gives him to the mercy of a girl who owns the ability to learn the history of objects by touch, and forces Noah Bennett to work together with her newborn son in search of escaped criminals from the fifth level. They find former prisoners during a bank robbery. Sylar saves Bennett and kills the villain, who owned the power of generating sound shock waves. Having made friends with his new brother Peter a little, Sylar tries to prevent him from going to Pinehurst, but he fails. Sylar goes to the side of Arthur Petrelli, who as well as Angela begins to use it for their own purposes. Arthur orders Sylar to kill Peter. Sylar telekinesis throws him out of the window, but softens his fall, not allowing that to die.
He later meets Elle Bishop, who was locked up in Arthur’s company. They managed to find a common language, and Sylar adopted Ell's ability to use electrokinesis, using empathy, that is, without opening the skull. They become partners, and their joint task is the delivery of the catalyst, which is in the body of Claire Bennet. But because of a solar eclipse, everyone loses his ability. Elle shoots Claire, and Noah knocks out Sylar’s hand, knocks out Elle and takes her daughter. Elle and Sylar make love, but Noah Bennet appears, who longs for revenge. He hurts Elle in the leg, but his companions manage to escape. They are hiding in the basement of the store, where Sylar, saving El, sends her to the elevator down, and he remains with Noah. He kills Sylar and leaves. The eclipse passes and the ability returns. Miss Bishop and Sylar arrive at the Bennet house with a new attempt to pick up Claire. Noah tells Sylar that he is not the son of Angela and Arthur and that they use him, and also explained that Elle knew everything. Hiro arrives and ferries Elle and Sylar to Costa Verde, where Sylar kills Elle. The next day, he burns her body and calls Arthur. He says he knows the whole truth. Sylar comes to Sue Landers’s office and takes her ability to discern a lie. He comes to Arthur at the moment when Peter shoots his father. Sylar stops the telekinesis bullet and, making sure that Arthur is not his father, sends a bullet to his head.
Volume Four
Sylar is trying to find his real father. To do this, he comes to his stepfather, a watchmaker, who ran away from them with his mother in childhood. He tells Sylar that he was sold to him by the brother and gives the address. Sylar comes to the indicated house, but there the special forces attack him. Sylar kills them, leaving them alone for questioning. However, the commando does not tell anything even under torture, and Sylar decides to transfer him to a neighboring house in order to force him to speak under the threat of reprisals against his family. It turns out that the teenager who lives there also has the ability (microwave radiation from the hands), and he kills the soldier, defending Sylar. The teenager tells Sylar that he knows where his father lives, and they go to him together. In the cafe, special forces attack them and the teenager rescues Syler from a shot to the back of the head. Siler escapes, leaving the guy alone, and special forces are enough, but then Siler rescues him, citing the fact that he was simply looking for a computer with data on the hunt for people with supernormal abilities. On the way, they meet an abandoned cafe, where Sylar recalls how his father sold him, and then killed his mother. Sylar sends the teenager home alive, and he visits his father, but finds out that he has cancer and will die soon anyway. During the conversation, the father finds out that the son has the ability to regenerate and tries to open his skull, but Sylar easily defeats him and leaves him to die from cancer.
Sylar unites with the commander of special forces Denko for a joint hunt for people with supernormal abilities. Their goal is a person who is able to reincarnate. Sylar took the ability from him, using empathy, to stage his death, as he took on his face, trying to deceive Danco. Denko shows Noah the body of a werewolf with a knife in the back of his head, saying that this is Sylar. But Sylar has a hard time with a new ability. Falling asleep in his body, he wakes up in another, and also finds an extra tooth. He later tries to recreate his mother. Noah did the experiment by removing the knife from the killer’s head, but he did not come to life as he should, and realized that he was simply deceived. Sylar decides to become Nathan. His goal is to get to the president and replace him. Sylar kills Nathan, but Peter managed to inject Sylar with sleeping pills, so he disconnected. Angela and Noah are trying to persuade Matt Parkman to erase Sylar’s personality and memories and create a new Nathan out of him. But in order for everyone to think that Sylar is dead, they burned the corpse of James Martin (a person with the ability to reincarnate) at the stake.
- What?
- It's all about the clock. They are in a hurry for a minute and a half.
Angela and Nathan in the body of Sylar
New body Nathan retained the ability and skills of Sylar.
Volume Five
Nathan has feelings that his memories belong to another. By chance, he discovers the ability to TV and electrokinesis and can not understand where they come from. Sylar's consciousness at this moment is in Matt Parkman's head and is trying to regain his body. Matt tries to abandon his abilities, but Sylar provokes him to use them, trying to subdue Parkman in such a way and return his body with his help. In the end, Sylar's mind manages to fool Matt and take control of his body. Meanwhile, Nathan is killing a hit man. He comes to life, but in the form of Sylar (but still with the memory of Nathan). In this form, he gets to the police, where they recognize the serial killer. Sylar does not believe in it and escapes using abilities. Sylar is then killed by the police, but he regenerates again and meets Samuel, who hides him. Samuel convinces Sylar that he must kill a detective who is hunting him, and also helps to see the past (Sylar sees how he killed people). But Sylar does not believe in this and is trying to fight it, in which the memory of Nathan helps him.
—How do we call you - Gabriel or Sylar?
- Call me Nathan
Samuel and Sylar
Sylar releases the detective, but Edgar kills him immediately. Then Sylar falls asleep, and Nathan wakes up. He cannot understand how he got here and escapes from the carnival. He comes to Peter and they try to find answers together. They, with the help of a Haitian, find the body of the real Nathan. Then, having guessed that there has not been without Parkman, they are sent to find him. Meanwhile, Matt is trying to regain control of his body and stop Sylar from rushing to the east. He manages to temporarily darken his mind and in this form the police start chasing them. Then Matt provokes Sylar and he raises the pistol in the presence of the police, for which he receives several bullets. Peter and Nathan find Matt badly wounded in the hospital. Peter heals Parkman, but he realizes that Sylar has not gone away. He tries to warn Nathan to run, however, Sylar again takes up and tells Parkman what he did with Sylar’s body, offers Nathan to fix everything by simply touching him. After accidentally touching, Sylar’s identity flows back into his body.
On Thanksgiving Day, infuriated by all that happened, Sylar takes on his appearance and tries to kill Angela and Peter, but Nathan’s identity does not let him do it and he runs away. Peter pursues him and, with the help of a Haitian ability, defeats Sylar and temporarily chases him away. Peter is trying to prove to Nathan that he can live by defeating Sylar, but Nathan feels that he cannot win and jumps from the roof. In the process of falling, he finally turns into Sylar. Regenerating after the fall, Sylar leaves.
However, Sylar feels that he has changed, but cannot understand how. He again goes to the carnival, where he tries to kill Samuel, but he defeats Sylar and leaves him with Lydia. With empathy, Sylar takes Lydia's ability and makes herself a tattoo and is surprised to see that the tattoo depicts Claire Bennet. Sylar goes to her college.
In college, Sylar grabs Claire and tries to get answers to the questions that torment him, on the grounds that she and Claire are alike. However, Claire thrusts a pencil into his eye and runs away. Sylar takes the form of Gretchen and hides with Claire in the closet - he is trying to get answers in a different way. During the conversation, Claire expresses the idea that Sylar will be able to live peacefully if he gets rid of his abilities. Sylar takes on his appearance and goes to Parkman.
Sylar tells Janice that he is Matt’s colleague, and Matt himself asks him to block his abilities. However, Matt fails and the enraged Sylar threatens Matt. Learning about everything Janice offers to deceive Sylar. Matt uses the ability to immerse Sylar in a kind of lethargic sleep, and then immures him in his basement.
At this point, Peter comes to Parkman, who is looking for Sylar to help him. Taking the ability to telepathy, he learns that Sylar is here and is trying to awaken him, but he himself falls into his nightmare. Parkman leaves Peter in the basement. Peter and Sylar end up in Sylar's nightmare - a city without people. Feeling remorse for his actions, Sylar thinks he deserves it, but Peter, who needs his help to save Emma Coolidge, is trying to get him out of there. He understands that for this you need to destroy the brick wall. In the end, they manage to do this, and Sylar discovers that part of Nathan’s memories stayed with him.
Both come to their senses in Matt’s basement, half a day after falling asleep, although several years passed in a dream. Here they are attacked by Eli, who was sent by Samuel, but Sylar defeats him, simultaneously saving Matt's life. Matt does not believe that Sylar has changed, but he voluntarily gives him to read his thoughts. Matt reluctantly lets him go.
Peter and Sylar rush to the carnival. There, Sylar is sent to rescue Emma and confronts Eric Doyle. Although Doyle succeeds in disabling Sylar, he loses control of Emma and she stuns him. Doyle begs Sylar to help Samuel and says that they are similar, but Sylar no longer wants to be a villain.
I'm a hero now!
At the beginning of the sixth volume, Sylar enthusiastically tells Peter what positive emotions he felt while saving Emma.
Sylar's Abilities
Sylar's own ability is to understand how everything works (Intuitive concept). He can use it both for repairing mechanisms or predicting the development of events, as well as for copying other people's abilities by establishing a brain area “responsible” for the ability. The downside of the medal is a kind of hunger, forcing Sylar to take away all new and new abilities. In one of the options for the future, he learned to cope with “hunger”, and in the other he was full, taking away many abilities, and killed other superhumans only in order to avoid competition from their side. It may also resist 'undeveloped' telepathy.
Abolished Abilities
Until the end of the first season, Sylar gained the following abilities: | ||
---|---|---|
Ability | "Donor" | Episode title |
Telekinesis | Brian davis | "Six months ago" ( eng. Six Months Ago ) |

Being infected with the Shanti virus, Sylar lost all his abilities. After healing, only the ability to understand how things are organized, as well as telekinesis, returned to him. Empathy, which, according to Arthur, Sylar always possessed, also remained, but he practically does not use it. However, in the “I Am Death” series, in different versions of the future Sylar has the abilities of Ted Sprague and Isaac Mendez. Subsequently, he may not have lost all of his abilities. During a solar eclipse, his abilities choked (as with all), and he was shot, but the eclipse passed and all the forces returned, and he was healed. He could resist Matt Parkman's attempts to telepathically erase his personality, retained his personality in Matt's mind and, after returning to his body, turned out to be stronger and destroyed the busy personality of Nathan Petrelli. He resisted (and eventually did not succumb) to attempts to erase his personality with the ability of a Haitian, taken by Peter Petrelli. Unconsciously (and successfully) resisted Matt Parkman’s attempts to telepathically suppress his abilities. In the series “The Wall”, he could theoretically get telepathy, since he learned to empathically copy abilities and for some time was with Peter Petrelli, who took Matt Parkman's ability.
