In the southwestern part of the district there is the famous Nevada test site with its center, the city of Mercury and the landfill waste storage in the artificial bunkers of Mount Yucca , nuclear testing activities constantly provoke heated debate of political and public organizations of the state. The federal government of the country owns 92% of the entire territory of the district, which is also the subject of constant contradictions between the federal authorities and the district administration.

Nye County is one of eleven counties in Nevada where prostitution is officially legalized and, according to research, has a positive effect on the economy of the entire county [3] .

History

Nye County was formed in 1864 and received its name in honor of James W. Nye, the first governor of Nevada , and then the US Senator . The capital of the okrug was originally the city of Jonah , then in 1867 the administrative center of the okrug was moved to Belmont, and finally, in 1905, the city of Tonopah became the capital of the Nye okrug .

The district experienced the first economic and industrial boom at the beginning of the twentieth century, when mining was demanded in the cities of Riolight , Tonopah and in the city of Goldfield, located on the border with the Esmeralda district . In 1906, the population of Goldfield reached 30 thousand people, Tonopah - 10 thousand and Riolight - also about 10 thousand people. All three cities were interconnected by the branches of the Railway Company Tonop and Taderwater [4] .

After the disappearance of the economic and industrial boom, the district's activity was sharply reduced. In 1910, the population fell to three thousand people [5] and varied slightly until the 1990s, when the city of Paramp turned into a sleeping area of the entertainment complex of Las Vegas .

From time to time, discussions are held regarding the transfer of the district administration to the city of Paramp or the separation of this city from the Nai district , but so far these proposals have not been supported by the district administration and federal authorities [6] .

Geography

According to the US Census Bureau, 4,225.4 square kilometers are part of the Nevada nuclear test site and, accordingly, this territory has not had any permanent population since 2000.

The largest city of Las Vegas is located 160 kilometers southeast of Mount Yucca and 97 kilometers from the district city of Parampa. Both cities are connected by federal highway number 160, which for the most part consists of four lanes of automobile traffic in both directions.

The highest point of the district is Mount Jefferson (3641 m).
