Biography
Evdokia Ivanova was born in 1810 in the estate Spasskoye-Lutovinovo , which belonged to the mother of I. S. Turgenev, Varvara Petrovna .
She studied at the theater school at the serf theater V.P. Turgeneva. At 13, she was redeemed among other serf actresses by entrepreneur P. A. Sokolov . She played in dramatic, opera and vaudeville performances in Voronezh , Tambov , Saratov , Simbirsk (1831-1832), Kazan and other provincial cities. She studied under M. Shchepkin , whom Sokolov invited to tour in Kazan.
At the age of 16, after the successful performance of Anyuta’s part in the comic opera “The Miller is a Sorcerer, a Deceiver and a Matchmaker ” based on Ablesimov’s play, she took a leading position in the Sokolov Theater, received solo opera parts and major roles in vaudeville.
In the early 1840s, Sokolov bought the actress from serfdom and married her. In 1843, the troupe came to the Urals, and for 15 years Ivanova played at the Yekaterinburg City Theater , as well as at Irbit and Perm venues.
After the death of her husband, Ivanov herself held the entreprise for some time, then left for Irkutsk and for 12 years acted in the entreprise of P. Medvedev . In 1870 (or 1875) she returned to Yekaterinburg. The last time she appeared on the scene on May 16, 1899 in the vaudeville "The Trouble Grandmother." She died on December 26, 1904 ( January 8, 1905 ) in Yekaterinburg.
One of the contemporaries of the artist wrote:
“She is attentive to everything in her roles, even in the smallest details, starting with a costume. All difficult situations and transitions from one state of mind to another performs perfectly. She stands characters like an intelligent, experienced and skillful actress. Her play from the beginning to the end of the play is smooth, free and exciting ” [1] .

- Biographers call Evdokia Ivanova “the grandmother of the Ural theater”, “the grandmother of the Ural scene”.
- The life story of Evdokia Ivanova formed the basis of the story “Good Old Time” and the story “Amendment of Dr. Osokin” by D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak . According to the writer, the history of the Yekaterinburg theater in the historical essay "The City of Yekaterinburg" was written by him according to the actress.
- The game by E. A. Ivanova was highly appreciated by M. Pisarev , V. Davydov , I. Turgenev (in 1861, the writer gave her his portrait).
