Sponson ( protrusion ) [1] , Spanson [2] :

  • in the fleet : a section of the upper deck protruding beyond the board of the ship, an onboard ledge. On the ships of the armored fleet on the sponson there were placed anti-mine artillery guns.
  • finishing in the form of a protrusion on board an armored vehicle ;
  • place on the wheeled vessel in front and behind of the hull of the paddle wheels, overboard where the cabins are placed [3] .

According to GOST : Sponson is a section of the deck of a ship with all its structures that protrudes beyond the line of the shipboard.

Also, a sponson is a plastic, fiberglass or metal blade used on boat seaplanes and jet skis , which, when moving directly, is above the water level, and when it is turned, it is immersed in water. Sponson is needed to ensure that when turning the back of the jet ski does not slide in the transverse direction, and kept on the water. The magnitude of the sponson depends on the size of the vessel itself, the average height is 10 centimeters, and the average length is 40–50 cm. Often the blade’s design provides for vertical and horizontal adjustment of the blade. With the help of vertical adjustment, a varying degree of holding force in the turn is achieved, and with the help of a horizontal one, the place of application of this force is provided. Properly installed and adjusted sponson allows you to significantly change the movement of the jet ski when turning.

Aircraft sponsons are used to increase the size of the deck.
