Biography

Board

After the death of Brother Pasqueten, Allen I the Great inherited his possessions. Initially, he had to wage a battle against the Counts of Rennes, which had already begun by his brother.

However, in the face of the general threat of attacks on the Brittany of the Normans , Alain in 888 or 890 teamed up with Count Judicael of Rennes . Although Yudikael died in the Battle of Kestamber , the Bretons, led by Alain, inflicted a crushing defeat on the Vikings, after which they for a long time did not dare to attack Brittany. Alain, on the day of victory at Kestamber directly on the battlefield, was proclaimed king by the army, thus restoring the unity of Brittany lost after the assassination of Salomon in 874 [1] [2] [3] [4] .

After the death of Judikael, Alain remained the only powerful ruler in Brittany. In addition, Alain entered into an agreement with the king of the West Frankish kingdom Louis Zaika , according to which Alain became a vassal of Louis, and in return he recognized Alain for the royal title. In the period after 890 and until the very death of Alain in 907, Brittany experienced a period of relative calm and prosperity, due to which the country's economy was gradually restored. His possessions included both those inhabited by Bretons ( Leon , Dumnonia , Cornwall , Vannete ), and possessions with a predominantly Frankish population (Rennes, Nantes, Avrancheshen, Cotantin and western Poitou ).

After the final collapse of the Carolingian Empire in 888, Allen became a virtually independent ruler, significantly strengthening his power, taking advantage of the weakness of the kings of the West Frankish kingdom. However, after the death of Alain in 907, his heirs could not maintain the unity of Brittany, which was divided into several parts. And by 919, practically the whole of Brittany was captured by the Normans. Only in 936 the grandson of Alain I, Alain II Curve Beard , was able to expel the Normans. However, Brittany ceased to be a kingdom and the possessions of Alain II were much less than the possessions of his grandfather.
