Story
Riga , the 30s of the XX century . Intelligent unemployed Olgert Kurmis can speak English and French and knows Latin, but now he is content with the duties of a porter. He is not a burden to do what comes to hand.
Together with his friend, the vagabond Fridis, he carries out the petty assignments of Mr. Kalnkays and his wife. The couple has a cherished goal: in any way to achieve the election of Mr. Kalnkays as a deputy of the Sejm.
Olgert feels responsible for the fate of Emma Karkles - a girl who received a short term for petty theft and recently released from prison. She works as a servant in the Kalnkays house. Helping her new acquaintances stick up election banners for Mr. Kalnkays’s party around the city, Emma got into the police and was arrested for “politics.” They managed to stick leaflets in such a way that number 49 was read as 19 - the number of the list of the Workers' Party.
Additional Facts
The director and scriptwriter Leonid Leimanis was well versed in the material, he himself was an active participant in public life in Latvia in the 30s. The genre of the film was designated as a political farce from the life of the bourgeois republic, which facilitated its passage through various instances. His role was played by the fact that the author of the literary source, the classic of Latvian literature, Andrei Upit was alive.
For the Riga film studio, this was the second experience with A. Upit's work. In 1956, Varis Krumins and Maris Rudzitis made a diploma in the novel Causes and Consequences. Now the film adaptation was entrusted to an experienced master.
Now it is difficult to imagine another performer of the role of Olgert Kurmis, but initially it was planned to film Uldis Putitsis . Only a mismatch in the shooting schedule (he was at the A. Dovzhenko studio at that time) allowed Eduard Pavuls to be approved.
The film premiered on August 27, 1969 at the Riga Cinema in Moscow. The hall was attended by actors of the Moscow Drama Theater. N.V. Gogol , who took part in dubbing the film and dubbing it into Russian. [one]
