History

In 1679, at the mouth of the Itantsy River, on the right bank of the Selenga , the Itantsin prison was built on the site of the hibernation that existed before it.

In 1706, the Church of the Savior of the Miraculous Image was built in the Itantsin prison. According to some reports, the church soon burned down, but was rebuilt again. In the 1780s, the temple was already dilapidated. By that time, the population of Ostrohny village had been greatly reduced, and the village of Turuntaevo in the middle reaches of the Itantsi was chosen to build a new church.

The decree on the construction of a new stone Church of the Savior in Turuntaevo was given by the Irkutsk Spiritual Consistory in March 1787. Construction began on June 10, 1791 . Supervised by the master Feodul Ezhakov. The construction of the church lasted almost 30 years and was completed in 1818 .

The construction of the Spassky Church in Turuntaevo led to the fact that Turuntaevo became a volost in the 19th century, and the Itantsinsky prison was completely dead.

The church was renovated in 1829 and in 1913.

In 1927, the temple was closed by decision of the local rural authorities "due to the failure of the maintenance and payment of state tax." March 18, 1939 the church was partially destroyed, icons, church books and utensils were burned. Since 1939, the temple was used as a warehouse of the NKVD , and then was transferred to the warehouse of the district consumer union. The last decades have not been used for household needs.

In 1991, the executive committee of the district council approved the Renaissance regional program, which aims to restore the Baikal monuments of history and culture. The parish was re-registered on June 13, 1995 . In April 2000, work began on the restoration of the Savior Church.

Architecture

The church has two thrones : in the name of the Miraculous Image of the Savior in the main cold part, and in honor of St. Nicholas, the miracle worker of Myra , in a warm chapel , consecrated in 1800.

On one axis are a bell tower , refectory and a temple with an altar aspect. The refectory and the winter church are covered with box vaults; they are illuminated by windows in the north and south walls. The main decoration of the interior were the iconostases of carpentry with carved details and gilding. The walls are decorated with stucco architectural decor in the form of a spot of a complex pattern. The facades are plastered, the roof is iron. The base of the dome cover and its high-altitude completion is stone, not wooden, as in other early Transbaikal temples. Because of this, the architectural forms have changed: instead of a slender spire, a short pyramidal spire with a ball and a cross.
