Distribution and Ecology
It is found on the Balkan Peninsula , in Asia Minor , the Caucasus and Transcaucasia . There is also an isolated population in Crimea .
It grows openly on dry clay-cartilaginous soil and on rocks, rising in the mountains up to 1600 m above sea level. In Crimea, it grows on the northern slopes among beech forests.
The age of trees reaches 300 years.
Botanical Description
A tree up to 16.5 m high with a pyramidal crown .
The bark is gray, young brown-reddish. The branches are often curved in an arc, the branches are almost tetrahedral, thickened.
The needles are dark green, the leaves are ovoid or lanceolate-pointed, pointed, tiled-oval or oblong-rhombic, often without glands, less often with an oblong gland, 2-10 mm long, when rubbed, they produce an unpleasant odor.
Dioecious plant . Pine cones with a diameter of 7-13 mm, spherical or ovoid, large, reddish-black, with a bluish coating. Seeds 1-2, rarely 3, oval or ovoid, pale chestnut.
Meaning and Application
The wood of the tree is dense, harsh, resistant to decay, and is highly regarded as a building material that does not suffer from insects.
The landings are very decorative.
