Build
Built by engineer Dupuis de Loma , the lead ship of the eponymous series . Launched on November 24, 1859 in Toulon .
Design
The hull of the ship was constructed from wooden and metal parts. The metal keels and frames had double lining, the inner wooden layer on the outside was additionally lined with steel carapace from plates 110–119 mm thick. The belt ranged from 1.80 meters below the waterline and to the upper deck of the ship.
Service
Despite the mixed design of its hull, La Gloire served for quite some time by the standards of its time, and was sold for scrap only in 1883 , after a little less than 25 years of service - however, it lost its combat value long before this time, being hopelessly outdated by the beginning of the 1870s.
