Kanotier ( fr. Canotier - “rower”) - French straw hat of rigid form with a cylindrical crown and straight, rather narrow fields. For the first time, young people who were keen on rowing and gondoliers began to wear it in the 1890-1900s in order to protect themselves from the sun. From the beginning of the 20th century, for several decades, Kanto, was a popular men's headdress and fashion accessory .

In Russia, at the turn of the century, young intellectual ladies wore skirts and blouses with puffy sleeves that were pulled tight at the waist and widened to the bottom. For their elegance and fragility, like those of lamp glass, thus dressed ladies were called “light bulbs” [1] . Among the admirers of Kanto was Coco Chanel , who preferred him to elaborate headgear, popular at that time among the French high society.

Kanotier disappeared from the mass use in Russia in the late 1930s. Nowadays, it is sometimes worn from the sun by both men and women: lightweight material, weightlessness and relatively small size make this hat an excellent stylish summer accessory in combination with a “duet” in marine style of flared trousers and a white striped top .
