Biography
Youth
Since childhood, Simon Le Bon studied acting and sang in the local church choir. Le Bon attended high school in Pinner ( Greater London ), which Elton John graduated a few years before. He worked as an assistant in the operating room in the accident department at Northwick Park Hospital, and also auditioned for a punk rock band at Harrow College, starred in several television commercials and participated in several theater productions. In 1978, Le Bon left for a kibbutz in the Negev desert in Israel , but returned to the UK to attend a theater school at the University of Birmingham until he met the newly formed Duran Duran . Le Bon studied at the University of Birmingham at the same time as Neil Arthur, the future leader of the synth-pop band Blancmange .
Duran Duran
Duran Duran was founded by bass player John Taylor , keyboardist Nick Rhodes and singer Steven Duffy in 1978, but Duffy left the band a year later because he did not see any prospects for her. Then several more changes of composition followed. The music of the group combined elements of disco , funk and rock , and the musicians were looking for a charismatic vocalist.
Simon Le Bon was introduced to the group in May 1980. His ex-girlfriend worked as a waitress in a nightclub where Duran Duran rehearsed, and she recommended Le Bon as a vocalist. Le Bon himself wrote poetry, and one of his poems, “Sound of Thunder”, went up to one of the instrumental compositions of the group. In the summer of that year, Duran Duran performed in the vicinity of London and Birmingham , and then went on tour with Hazel O'Connor as a warming up group. In December, the band was signed by EMI .
The first Duran album Duran was released in 1981 and immediately brought the group into the lead of a new romance . The following three years, Duran Duran released albums every year: Rio (1982), Seven and the Ragged Tiger (1983) and Arena (1984). Each release was accompanied by a promotional campaign and a long concert tour. The musicians were exhausted, and the group temporarily stopped recording tracks and performing, and the participants engaged in side projects. Le Bon, Rhodes and drummer Roger Taylor created the pop band Arcadia, which released one album in 1985.
With a new line-up (without Roger Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor), Duran Duran resumed their activities and released the Notorious album in 1986, and Big Thing two years later. In 1989, the group again became a quintet: it included guitarist Warren Cuccurullo and drummer Stirling Campbell . Campbell left after recording the album Liberty (1990). In general, in the late 80s, the band's popularity waned. The 1993 release of The Wedding Album was successful, with hits like Ordinary World and Come Undone. After several months of supporting the album, the last concerts had to be postponed due to problems with Le Bon's vocal cords .
In 1995, Duran Duran released a compilation of Thank You cover versions , in which Le Bon sang songs from his favorite musicians such as Jim Morrison , Lou Reed and Elvis Costello . The album was crushed by critics, but was, however, approved by the original artists. In the same year, Le Bon performed “Ordinary World” at the charity concert of the organization Child Child “Children of Bosnia” together with the famous tenor Luciano Pavarotti .
After the departure of bassist John Taylor in 1997, Le Bon and Rhodes remained the last two members of the group, who remained in the composition from the first album. The group continued to exist as a trio of Le Bon, Rhodes and Cuccurullo, but the two albums of the late 90s went relatively unnoticed. In 2001, the original Duran reunion took place; in the fall of 2004, Astronaut released an album on Epic Records , which rose high on the charts and received gold status in the UK. The single "(Reach Up For The) Sunrise" was the first in a decade to hit the top 10 UK Singles Chart .
