The Leipzig Book Fair appeared in the 17th century. By the 18th century, Leipzig had become the center of German book trade. At the fair, numerous publishers from Germany and other countries of the world present various kinds of literature, school books, newspapers and magazines, calendars, art albums, audio books. There are only four hundred companies that specialize in publishing children's literature at this event.

Visitors to the exhibition can not only purchase books and other printed materials, but also attend lectures, discussions, meet with writers and artists, and see the award ceremony for the best publishers and authors. The cost of admission for all days of the exhibition, as a rule, does not exceed 20 euros. The book fair is traditionally held in conjunction with the spring literary festival Leipzig Readings. Each year, this event gathers tens of thousands of word art fans.
