About composition
The song is dedicated to former band member Sid Barrett , who left the band in 1968 due to an unstable mental state caused by drug use. She named Shine On Pink Floyd and Crazy Diamond Sid Barrett.
It was originally planned that “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” would completely occupy one side of Wish You Were Here , like “ Atom Heart Mother ” or “ Echoes ”, but then the composition was divided into two parts used at the beginning and end of the album.
In addition to the original version, with the song split into two halves, there are two more versions included in the albums A Collection of Great Dance Songs and Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd : the first one lasts 10 minutes 55 seconds and contains the entire first part, a bit cropped the second, entirely the third and fourth (with text), the transition from the sixth to the seventh, the seventh (with the text) and the edited transition from the seventh to the eighth, ending with radio effects from “ Wish You Were Here ”; the version with Echoes is essentially the first seven parts that have not been changed, in the same transition from the seventh to the eighth part the ticking of the clock from “ Time ” sounds.
