Sakhalin rhinutria ( lat. Reynoútria sachalinénsis ) is a plant species of the Reynoutria genus of the Buckwheat family ( Polygonaceae ), found in the Far East and in Japan .

Botanical description
Perennial plant 2-4 in height, up to 5 meters.
Stem is vertical, hollow, not very branchy, smooth, thick, with thickened internodes.
The leaves are evergreen or falling, short-petaled, sharp, with a heart-shaped or rounded base, 15-30 cm long and 7-25 cm wide, with a slightly wavy edge, sometimes pubescent at the bottom with short hairs.
The inflorescences are axillary panicles, collected in short bunches of a length of 3–8 cm. The flowers are small, whitish, the perianth is leucoid, its internal parts with pterygoid processes that grow on the fruits.
The fruit is a triangular nutlet , dark brown, brilliant, spiky.
Blossoms in August - September. The fruits ripen in September - October.
Dissemination and ecology
It is found on Sakhalin , the Kuril Islands and in Japan (the islands of Hokkaido and Honshu ).
It grows on the slopes of the mountains.
The chemical composition of plant materials
Up to 15–20% of proteins , rutin (0.3–1.1), ascorbic acid (0.56–0.88), carotene (0.008–0.012), and mineral salts of phosphorus (0.3–0 , 5), calcium (0.7–1.5), fiber (26–30%). The content of tannins in the leaves does not exceed 10.5% with a goodness of 20-40, in the roots to the beginning of flowering it reaches 30%. The Highlander of Sakhalin is one of the important sources of resveratrol and its glycoside.
Application
Widely distributed in culture as an ornamental plant . The plant is planted for decorating ponds, hedges, on lawns . Easily becomes a malignant weed .
The population of Sakhalin uses fresh and boiled leaves as food when preparing salads and soups . The soft tips of the young shoots slightly resemble rhubarb in taste.
The plant produces a large amount of green mass, young shoots are eaten by cows and horses. The possibility of using the ensiled Sakhalin mountaineer (before the budding stage) as feed for farm animals is shown.
The plant has bactericidal activity.
Extract from the leaves can be used in pure form and in a bouquet with fir extract for tanning the skin .
