Club
At the club level, Heinkes played for Borussia from Monchengladbach and Hannover 96 . He was a fast and skillful forward. His partners in Borussia were such great players as Gunter Netzer , Herbert Wimmer , Allan Simonsen , Bertie Vogts , Wolfgang Kleff and others, coached the team first Hennes Weisweiler , then Udo Lattek . The period that has come for “Borussia” after the return of Heynckes from “Hanover” is the best in the history of the team in terms of the number of trophies won, it was called the “Golden Decade”. Many players of the team were called up to the West German national team, which then became for some time the strongest in world football and won the European Championship 1972 and World Cup 1974 . Heynckes was one of the team’s leading players, scoring over 230 goals for her in all tournaments.
As part of Borussia, Heynckes won the German championship four times, won the UEFA Cup and the German Cup . And in all these successes of the team, his role was great. Twice in a row, at the height of his talent, he became the Bundesliga's top scorer. In the 1974/75 UEFA Cup final, he made a hat-trick in the second leg against Twente , his club defeated the Dutch 5-1. Two years before, he took a double in the second leg of the UEFA Cup final match against Liverpool , but this did not help his team, who lost in the sum of two matches to the great team of the Reds under the leadership of Bill Shankly , Kevin Keegan answered for the double of Heinkes . In the final of KECH 1976/77 , Borussia again lost to the Merseysides, who had already been coached by another great coach, Bob Paisley . Both times, Borussia were opposed by such players as Tommy Smith , Ray Clemens , Kevin Keegan, Steve Highway and others. Nevertheless, thanks to the failure of Liverpool, it was the German club that got the right to play in the 1977 Intercontinental Cup against Boca Juniors , the strongest South American team of those years; however, in those two games, Heynckes, whose career was nearing its end by that time, did not enter the field; Borussia then lost in the sum of two matches.
Heynckes' last season as a player was the 1977/78 season , in which his team lost the championship to Cologne only by additional indicators. In general, the main competitor of Borussia during the Heinckes era in the domestic arena was Bayern Munich, another club that gave a large number of players to the German national team of those years, a club where Franz Beckenbauer , Paul Breitner , Gerd Müller , Sepp Mayer and many others shone others; naturally, at the club level they all repeatedly played against Heynckes and his team, but in the national team they were his partners and together won many matches; It is also interesting that Udo Lattek, who accepted Borussia after Weissweiler left, had coached Bavaria, its principal rival in those years.
Heynckes is third in the number of goals in the history of the Bundesliga with 220 goals, behind Gerd Müller (365 goals) and Klaus Fischer (268 goals).
Team
For the national team of Germany played 39 matches, scored 14 goals. He played both matches of the final part of the European Championship-1972, which became victorious for the Germans. At the victorious 1974 World Cup he played two of seven matches, both in the first group stage. I did not score goals in both of these tournaments. In general, over the nine years of playing for the national team he appeared on the field regularly, was one of the important parts of the great team of Helmut Schön along with Beckenbauer, Sepp Mayer, Gerd Muller, Breitner, Netzer and others.
Coaching career
A year after completing a gaming career, Heynckes became a coach. He trained Borussia for eight years, replacing Udo Lattek. The best years of the team by that time were left behind, the players of the victorious squad in which he himself shone, gradually left, and the team under his leadership was able to twice become the third in the Bundesliga and reach the cup finals, but the competition with Bayern and other leaders German football of those years could not make up. In 1987, Heynckes became the coach of Bayern Munich, the club that, when Jupp was a player, was the main competitor of Borussia. Under his leadership, such players as Stefan Effenberg , Lothar Matteus , Klaus Augenthaler (it is interesting that he had played against striker Heinckes 10 years before), Roland Wolfart and others played for the Munich team; Heynckes led Bayern to two league titles in the Bundesliga.
Then, without much success, he worked for two seasons in Spain at the Athletic Bilbao club. In the 1994/95 season, he trained the middle middleweight of the Bundesliga Eintracht ( Frankfurt ). Then he worked with the Spanish Tenerife , having reached the 1996/97 UEFA Cup semi -final , during the tournament the middle peasant Examples unexpectedly knocked Feyenoord and Lazio , in the 1/2 finals Heinckes club lost to Schalke 04 only in overtime. After Heynckes thus confirmed his high class as a coach, he was invited by Real Madrid . Under the leadership of Heinckes, the Madrid team won the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League, and Juventus was replayed in the final. Among the players of the “Real” team of that time, one can distinguish Predrag Miyatovic , Bodo Illgner , Roberto Carlos , Davor Shuker , Fernando Hierro , Clarence Seedorf , Raul , Christian Carambo , Fernando Redondo , Savio ; the team was perhaps the leader of those years in the number of stars collected and one of the leaders in the quality of the game. The title won by the Madrid team under the leadership of Heinckes was the first for them in 32 years. Be that as it may, the Real Madrid leadership had some complaints about the work of a German specialist, the 4th place in La Liga that season was regarded as a failure, and despite winning the Champions League, Heynckes left his post at the end of the season .
In the future, Heynckes' career began to decline. He worked one season at Benfica , becoming the third in the championship of Portugal, then he did not train Athletic Bilbao and Schalke 04 very successfully and did not last long. In May 2006, he headed his native Borussia, but on January 31, 2007, he resigned due to disastrous results [17] , and the team took the penultimate position and flew out of the Bundesliga at the end of the season. On April 27, 2009, he headed Bayern Munich as a temporary coach after the dismissal of Jürgen Klinsmann [18] [19] . He was faced with the task of winning the Bundesliga, but in the end the Munich team lost two points to Wolfsburg , becoming the second. After working for about a month, he left his post at the end of the season. On June 5, 2009, Jupp Heynckes signed a contract with the Leverkusen Bayer (leading him to the Bundesliga silver medals in 2011) [20] [21] .
At the end of the 2010/11 season, Heynckes left Bayer 04 and was appointed head coach of Bayern Munich [22] . In the 2011/2012 season, Bayern have not won a single trophy. In the Bundesliga , Bayern lost four rounds to the finish in a full-time meeting of Borussia Dortmund with a score of 0: 1 and almost lost their chances of gold. In the German Cup, Bayern reached the finals, where they lost 2–5 to the same Borussia. In the Champions League , Bayern also made it to the finals, knocking Madrid out of the Real Madrid draw on the way. The final was held at the home stadium of Bavaria, the Alliance Arena , where Bayern lost in the penalty shootout to London Chelsea 3: 4. The main time of the match ended with a score of 1: 1 [23] .
After information appeared in the media that Josep Guardiola was appointed to the post of head coach of Bayern [24] , but he would start his coaching duties only at the end of the 2012/13 season, some of the top clubs in Europe became interested in Heynkes.
The last season at the head of Bayern turned out to be the most successful in Heynckes' career. The Munich club under his leadership won all the trophies being played (the championship , the Cup and the Super Cup of Germany , as well as the UEFA Champions League ) [25] [26] , Jupp became the first coach in the history of the Bundesliga who managed to win a “ golden hat-trick ” [27] .
On June 16, 2013, Heynckes announced that he was ending his football career [28] [29] :
| I can confidently say that I am completing a coaching career. The moment is right for this. Bayern found a suitable replacement for me, but if this had not happened, then I would probably have stayed [30] . |
On December 9, Heynckes, along with Sir Alex Ferguson and Jürgen Klopp, was nominated for the title of FIFA's best coach of the year [31] [32] [33] . As a result, it was Hainkes who was awarded this award.
On October 6, 2017, Heynckes resumed his coaching career, again leading Bayern after the dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti . The contract with the specialist was calculated until the end of the season [34] . During this time, Heynckes led the team to the next champion title.
