Glaucidium bellaceous ( Latin: Glaucidium palmátum ) is the only species of the genus found on Hokkaido Island and in the northern part of Honshu Island in mountain forests.
The phylogenetic affinity of the plant with representatives of another genus of the Ranunculaceae family, the Yellowstone ( Hydrastis ), was established.
TitleThe scientific name of this genus of plants completely coincides with the name of the genus of birds of prey, passerine owls ( Glaucidium boie ) of the owl family ( Strigidae ). Both words go back to Greek. γλαυκός “light blue”, “greenish”, “gray”. Hence the ancient Greek names for owls γλαυκός , γλαύξ , which served as a source of the scientific Latin name for the genus passerines. And by color, in ancient Greek, the juice of the horned mackerel ( Glaucium corniculatum ) was called, hence the generic name Glaucium (Sap), from which, due to the similarity of the flowers, the name of the genus Glaucidium was formed.
