Ford Laser

Ford Laser is a compact car sold by Ford in Asia, Oceania, Africa and parts of South America and Mazda in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Basically it was available in sedan and hatchback, however, in some stores there were wagons and pickups.

Connection with the Mazda 323

Ford Laser has been a restyled version of the Familia / 323 models produced by Mazda in Japan since the 1980s. In Australia, New Zealand and Europe, where Ford was a “local” brand, Laser was sold by Mazda, and in neighboring Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, where Japanese cars were well known, were sold by Ford. In South America, Africa, the Laser was sold, as long as it was being assembled.

The new Laser KJ was introduced in 1994 and became the first fully imported model from Japan, after which the Australian Ford branch decided to close. The Ford Laser KJ had major differences from previous KH models. Nevertheless, the model became a failure and disappointed with its sales, mainly due to the fact that the smaller Festiva and also the Korean models were more popular.
