The main substance of the cornea , or stroma of the cornea , is a transparent layer that makes up the main part of the cornea of the eye . The stroma is formed by a variety of lamellae - parallel plates, woven from collagen fibers. The length of collagen fibers is 24-25 nm; the distance between them is the same in different individuals of the same species, but in different species varies from 31 to 77 nm. [2] Corneal keratocytes are located between the lamellae.

In 2005, a message appeared about the detection of multipotent stem cells on the periphery of the stroma, near the corneal limb . [3]
One group of researchers reports that the stroma of the human cornea is characterized by the presence of sutural lamellae ( English sutural lamellae ), protruding at an angle into the Bowman layer . [four]
