Creative Biography

In 1895-1902 he studied at the mathematics and law faculties of Moscow University ; at the same time engaged in vocal with his mother. From 1893 he took violin lessons from N. Sokolovsky , a professor at the Moscow Conservatory, and participated in the children's orchestra of A. Erarsky . From 1895 he played in the student orchestra under the direction of M. Ippolitov-Ivanov , while at the same time working after graduating from the university for two years as assistant attorney in Moscow. Then he improved as a singer in Berlin with A. Kairati and Dresden with R. Muller ; in 1907–1914 he performed on the stages of various cities in Germany. With the beginning of the First World War, returning to Russia, in 1914 he made his debut at the Zimin Opera House. Then two months - in the theater of operetta I. Zone; from November 1917 he returned to the Zimin Theater , which became the Theater of the Moscow Council of Workers' Deputies; from October 1918 he performed in the theater studio Hudozh.-skylight. Union of Workers' Organizations (KhPSROZ). In 1920-36 he worked at the Bolshoi Theater .

Engaged in teaching activities. In 1919, the opera class was opened in the Gnesins School under the direction of V. Nardov, who became the first head of the opera class, where not only individual opera fragments were staged, but the whole opera as well. His first production here was - “The Marriage of Figaro” by W. A. ​​Mozart [1] . In 1923–28 he was the head of the opera class at the Moscow Conservatory . Since 1940 - Professor of the Moscow Conservatory (in 1940–41, Head of the Department of Dramatic Art). Among the students: S. Lemeshev , N. Khanaev , V. Slivinsky , S. Krasovsky .
