Story

Prologue

A poor girl, Lyubov Ivanovna Otradina, accidentally learns that her beloved, Grigory Lvovich Murov (from whom she bore her son Grisha ), is going to marry another girl at the insistence of her mother. Taisia Ilyinichna Shelavina , his bride, Lyuba's girlfriend, knows nothing about this story; not hiding, she tells Otradina that the groom does not love and he is needed not so much as a husband, but as a manager with her capital. After Shelavina’s departure and a brief explanation with Murov, Lyuba receives another sad message — Grisha, who is in the care of Arina Galchikhi, is about to die.

Main action

The events of the second action unfold seventeen years after the prologue. The arrival of the famous actress Elena Ivanovna Kruchinina made a lot of noise in the town; the local theater people are particularly excited. Rich barin and philanthropist Nile Stratonych Dudukin tries to please the beauty in everything. Kruchinina, by chance meeting with the half-crazed Arina Galchikha, learns that Grisha, whom she considered dead for seventeen years, survived and then, at the insistence of Murov, was brought up to strangers. Soon comes Murov himself, in a famous actress who recognized Lyuba Otradina. Murov speaks reluctantly about his son, gets confused, lies, then he admits that he gave Grisha to “good people”, putting a medal of Otradina on his neck, but he doesn’t know anything about his future fate.
The intrigue Korinkina with the participation of the hero-lover Petit Milovzorov uses the story of Kruchinin to turn a young actor Grigory Neznamov against her, whose filial love Kruchinina managed to earn during her stay in the city. Neznamov is an orphan himself - a child abandoned by his parents. Confident that Kruchinina voluntarily left her own son and wanting to hurt her more painfully, Neznamov makes a toast to “mothers who abandon their children”. Among other things, he denounces the tradition to leave a trinket as a keepsake to the abandoned child: “these souvenirs burn a chest”.
Kruchinina recognizes his locket around Neznamov’s neck and faints. Dudukin tells Neznamov the true story of Lyuba Otradina. Recovering, Kruchinina embraces his son.
