Biography

Born in 1793, received his education in the Noble regiment , he was promoted to officer during World War II (November 28, 1812), and participated in the Foreign Campaigns of 1813-1814 as part of the Belarusian Hussars .

Upon his return to Russia, he retired with the rank of staff captain. In 1823, he again entered the service as a tutor in the Page Corps and soon began teaching tactics and military history; in 1832, already a lieutenant colonel , he was appointed a class inspector; in this position he was successively promoted to colonel (March 26, 1839) and to major general (December 6, 1847). He held the position of inspector until 1856, when he was appointed a member of the Academic Committee of military schools. November 14, 1863 was promoted to lieutenant general and enlisted in the reserve troops for the army infantry, which consisted until the end of life.

As a military writer, Ortenberg is known for his essay in German: “Notes on the War of 1813 in Germany”, published in 1855 in Germany and then translated into Russian and printed by Yu. A. Jungmeister in St. Petersburg .

I. F. Ortenberg died in St. Petersburg on December 27, 1866, and was buried at the Volkov Lutheran cemetery.

His brother, Yakov Fedorovich (1806-1850), also served in the Russian imperial army in artillery and was a major general.
