Description

Species of this family have long legs, where the name comes from. The body (3.5-15 mm) is elongated and thin from yellow to black. The head is elongated or rounded. Bone vein without interruptions [3] . Species of the genus Anaeropsis have stalked eyes [4] . The front pair of legs is always shorter than the rest. The genus Calycopteryx has short wings, while the species Badisis ambulans , similar to an ant, has absolutely no wings.

Nutrition

The nutrition of the larvae is also poorly studied, perhaps they are herbivorous or detritophages . Mimegralla larva feeds on the roots of ginger and turmeric. In laboratory conditions, the female Mimegralla coeruleifrons lays between 76 and 150 eggs in the soil. The embryonic period lasts from 2 to 5 days. The larval period varies from 13 to 25 days. The pupal period is from 5 to 15 days. Flies live from 7 to 24 days [5] . Micropeza corrigiolata larvae feed on legume root nodules, eating out the contents of nodules [6] . Adults can be predators, for example, like the genus Calobata , and can eat feces or rotting fruits [7] .

Distribution and habitat

Walking shoes are ubiquitous, with the exception of New Zealand and the Macquarie Islands . Maximum diversity is achieved in the tropical and subtropical zones.
