History
Since the 1920s, numerous efforts have been made to locate a permanent airfield within the city, however, until 1930 the city council and the federal government could not find a consensus on the allocation of land for the construction of the airfield. Private and non-commercial aerodrome sites for the operation of aircraft were located in a number of places in the suburban area, but not one of them was suitable for prolonged use by commercial aircraft.
In 1929, several interested aviators leased the area of the former Connor Park racecourse for a long time and began work on preparing the site for receiving aircraft. On February 9, 1930, the Rockhampton Aero Club was formed [5] ; on March 2 of the same year, the Connor Park Airfield opened, which a few weeks later was officially opened as Rockhampton Airport and accepted its first passenger flight on the Fokker Cairns Star monoplane .
During World War II, Rockhampton Airport came under the complete control of the Australian Union and housed the Royal Air Force base in Australia . The entire airport complex during this period was reconstructed, modernization of dispatching facilities was carried out, a control tower and other facilities of the complex were built. Work was done to create a quick deconstruction system for the runway in case of emergency, which lasted until 1987.
In February 1989, Rockhampton Airport became fully owned by the city government.
Present
In 2008, the Rockhampton Airport completed a program to modernize the passenger terminal building, which cost the airport $ 8.4 million. The main changes included the removal of old inspection areas, the introduction of modern areas for ticket registration, baggage clearance and inspection, baggage carousels, the opening of a new cafe-restaurant, and the transfer of several service facilities to the international flights area.
During 2008, work was completed on the installation of new air conditioners and a lighting system for passenger halls, a second security zone was put into operation, the passenger departure hall was expanded, and about 280 new passenger seats were added. [6] Also, the airport management in the near future intends to attract new trading companies to place them in the service area of the passenger terminal. [7]
