Gameplay

One of the levels of the game

The source of inspiration for the developers was a series of Worms games. As a result, the game borrowed many aspects from it.

Several teams of hedgehogs are trying to destroy each other with a variety of weapons. Teams go only sequentially, for each move a certain time is given. During the game bonuses are given, a new weapon is opened.

Weapons

The player has at his disposal more than 50 types of weapons, including dynamite , bazooka , baseball bat , teleport , napalm , kamikaze , watermelon bomb , grenade , gun and others. Weapons and many parameters are configured through the weapon selection menu. Most weapons, through explosions, distort the terrain, tearing pieces from it. The weapon also damages the hedgehogs, based on what weapon is used and how it gets into the hedgehog. Damage is counted at the end of the turn.

Landscape

The landscape of the islands is a piece of land hovering above water or a limited cave with water at the bottom.

Hedgehogs

The characters in the game are customizable pink hedgehogs. Teams can have different voices, forts, each hedgehog can look its own way due to the put on “hats”. Hats are images used to change the appearance of the hedgehog. The names of individual hedgehogs or teams can also be changed. The hedgehog dies if his health drops to zero or if he falls into the water. There are two exceptions to the latter case: 1) a hedgehog in a flying saucer can swim under water until the fuel runs out; 2) at a sufficiently high speed and small angle between the direction of movement of the hedgehog and the surface of the water, the hedgehog can bounce off of it (this principle also underlies the so-called “ pancakes ”), which experienced players use when moving with a rope.

Game Modes

Several players can play against each other, as a rule, each of them with the help of one team. There are currently four game modes: training, against the computer , Hot-seat, or multiplayer (if all players use the same version of the game). The last two modes can be combined by adding one of the network players to several teams that will be used by several players as in the Hot-seat.

Prevalence

In February 2009, the number of downloads of the game from the gna.org mirror was more than that of Wormux [7] .

Development

Hedgewars is developed in various programming languages, including: Free Pascal for the engine , C ++ for the GUI , Haskell for the server , Lua as a scripting language in maps.

In addition, the graphical interface is written using the SDL and Qt4 libraries .
