Biography

Baba Si gained fame in 1959 when he won a sensational victory in the French Championship (Senegal was part of it), for which he was recommended by the French draftsman Emil Biscon . The very next year, he took second place at the World Championships in the Netherlands after the Soviet athlete Vyacheslav Shchegolev . Over the following years, Xi won many prizes at the largest drafts tournaments, and in 1963 he was supposed to participate in the match for the world championship in Moscow against Iser Kuperman , but Baba Xi did not come to the competition, the match was disrupted, and Kuperman was declared the winner without games. According to one version, this was intentionally done by the USSR Sports Committee , whose officials feared the possible loss of Kuperman [1] .

The last success of Baba Si in the fight for the world championship was the third place in the 1964 championship , after which he did not occupy high positions in these competitions, which did not prevent him from successfully playing in ordinary tournaments, where he often beat the largest drafts players ( including Kuperman).

Baba Xi died in a car accident in 1978. In 1986, as a result of the investigation, the World Drafts Federation blamed the Soviet side for disrupting the competition between Xi and Kuperman, and the Senegalese was posthumously declared world champion in 1963, while Kuperman was not stripped of his title.
