In 1947, there were also Biklozhsky, Gankovichsky, Kovlyakovsky, Makarovichsky, Novikovsky, Pozharishchensky, Pyatigorsk, Sinitsky, Strelishchensky village councils [6] .

Geography

The area of ​​the district is 1249.7 km² (20th place in the Vitebsk region) [7] .

The district is located in the center of the Vitebsk region and borders the Vitebsk , Shumilinsky , Ushachsky , Lepelsky , Chashniksky , Sennensky districts, is 51 km from Vitebsk and 210 km from the capital of the Republic of Belarus - Minsk .

Water system

The main rivers are the Western Dvina , its tributaries Ulla , Krivinka . There are more than 50 lakes in the region, the largest of them are Soro , Borovno , Beloye , Ostrovenskoye , Slobodskoye , Gorodno .

History

The area was formed in 1924 .

Until 1930, it was part of the Vitebsk district .

February 20, 1938 included in the Vitebsk region. In 1938, there were 20 village councils and 2 towns (Beshenkovichi and Ulla) in the district [8] . In 1947, 15 village councils and 334 settlements [6] .

During the Great Patriotic War , 4 ghettos were created in the area by the Nazis , where Jews were driven and almost completely destroyed.

Part of the modern territory of the district was occupied by the Ullsky district .

Population

The population is 15,914 people (as of January 1, 2016), including 6,701 people in the village of Beshenkovichi, the rest in the countryside [2] .

In 2018, 14.6% of the population of the district were younger than able-bodied, 50.1% - able-bodied, 35.3% - older than able-bodied. According to the share of the population over working age, the district divides 1-2 places in the Vitebsk region (with the Rossonsky district) [15] . In 2017, the birth rate was 8.9 per 1000 people (one of the lowest in the Vitebsk region), the mortality rate was 19.9 [16] (the average birth and death rates in the Vitebsk region were 9.6 and 14.4, in the Republic of Belarus - 10.8 and 12.6 [17] ). In 2017, 139 were born in the district and 311 people died [18] . The balance of internal migration is negative (-66 people in 2017) [19] .

In 2017, 84 marriages (5.4 per 1000 people) and 50 divorces (3.2) were concluded in the district; average indicators in the Vitebsk region - 6.4 and 3.4 per 1000 people, in the Republic of Belarus - 7 and 3.4 per 1000 people, respectively [20] [21] .

Economics

The average salary in the district is 82.3% of the average level in the Vitebsk region [22] . In 2017, the region’s enterprises exported goods worth $ 0.3 million, imported $ 13.2 million (balance - $ 12.9 million) [23] . In 2015-2017, $ 6.7 million of foreign investments, including $ 5.7 million of direct investments, were received in the real sector of the economy of the region [24] .

The revenue of enterprises and organizations of the region from the sale of products, goods, works, services in 2017 amounted to 111.8 million rubles (about $ 55 million), including 28.9 million rubles accounted for agriculture, 14.1 million for industry, 4.1 million for construction, 62.3 million for trade and repair [25] .

Industry

The largest industrial enterprise is NPP Belkotlomash LLC, located in the regional center. It specializes in the production of boiler equipment with a thermal power from 100 kW to 15 MW [26] .

In the village of Dvurechye, there is an enterprise for the primary processing of flax - the Beshenkovichi flax mill (a branch of Priozerny Mir OJSC) [26] .

Agriculture

In 2017, 13.3 thousand ha of arable land was sown for grain crops, 12.7 thousand ha for fodder crops, 0.4 thousand ha for flax crops [27] . The gross harvest of grain and leguminous plants in 2017 amounted to 30 581 tons (average yield - 23 kg / ha), the collection of flax fiber amounted to 303 tons [28] .

As of January 1, 2018, the agricultural organizations of the district (excluding farms and personal households of the population) contained 20 thousand heads of cattle (including 6.4 thousand cows), 23.2 thousand pigs, 518.3 thousand heads of birds [29] . In 2017, 12,462 tons of meat (slaughter weight) and 29,525 tons of milk were produced [30] . In 2017, district poultry farms produced 11.3 million eggs [31] .

Highways Lepel - Vitebsk , Shumilino - Senno pass through the district.

Health

In 2017, there were 44 medical practitioners at the institutions of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus (28.4 in terms of 10 thousand people; the average for the Vitebsk region is 37, for the Republic of Belarus - 40.5) and 164 average medical workers. There were 88 hospital beds in medical institutions of the district (56.9 in terms of 10 thousand people; the average for the Vitebsk region is 80.5, for the Republic of Belarus - 80.2). The provision of the population with hospital beds in the Beshenkovichi district is the lowest in the Vitebsk region [32] .

Culture and Education

In the district center is the Beshenkovichi District Museum of History and Local Lore with 15.1 thousand museum items of the main fund. In 2016, the museum was visited by 3.2 thousand people [33] [34] .

In 2017, there were 10 pre-school educational institutions in the district (including kindergarten-school complexes) with 522 children. In the 2017/2018 academic year, there were 10 institutions of general secondary education, in which 1,438 students studied. The educational process in schools was provided by 232 teachers [35] .

In the agricultural town of Ulla , the Ulle State Vocational Lyceum named after Lev Dovator , in which specialists are trained in 7 specialties (mainly agricultural and construction) [36] .

Religion

In the region, 11 Orthodox communities, 2 Catholic communities, one community of Christians of the Evangelical Faith (Pentecostals) and Evangelical Christians-Baptists are registered [37] .
