James Philipp Bagian (Kundebagyan) ( born James Philipp Bagian ; born February 22, 1952 ) is an American astronaut , doctor, engineer, athlete and pilot of Armenian origin [1] . Born in 1952 in Philadelphia . In 1974 - 1978 He participated in numerous aviation competitions, and since 1980 he was admitted to the group of US astronauts. Rodian Bagyan is from Western Armenia. His father, Philip Bagian, managed to serve America during the Second World War. James was born in Philadelphia in 1952, in a family of immigrants. His parents are Philip and Rosa (German). His grandfather Nazareth Kundebagyan emigrated from Arabkir to America in 1913. There he married my grandmother Satenik, who was from Malatia and emigrated to America earlier - in 1908. She arrived with her tailor father and was the eldest of his daughters. She also had a brother. My grandparents had four children. When the paternal grandfather from Armenia to America emigrated to the immigration bureau, his name Kundebagyan was reduced to “Bagyan”.

From March 13 to 18, 1989, as a specialist in medical and biological research, he flew on the Discovery spacecraft as part of the Space Shuttle STS-29 .
From June 5 to June 14, 1991, he participated in the STS-40 expedition on the Columbia spacecraft.
He is director of the Center for Medical Engineering and Patient Safety at the University of Michigan . [2]
