Story
10 years before James T. Kirk , the Enterprise starship was commanded by Captain Christopher Pike . The starship devices receive a distress signal coming from the planet Talos-IV. By tracking the signal, researchers find survivors of the long-standing crash of a science starship. Among the elderly and old scientists, a beautiful young woman named Vina is discovered. Pike became interested in her, as a result of which he was captured by the Talosians living underground. As it turned out, the distress signal and the surviving scientists of the missing expedition, except for Vina, were just illusions for the bait created by the Talosians.
Once Talos depopulated, now Talosians want to populate the surface of the planet, for which they needed Pike and Wines. They want to use their Talosians instead of healthy "breeding cattle".
Talosians use the power of illusions to draw Pike to Wine as much as possible. She is represented in various roles: the Rigelian princess, the green woman from Orion, etc. But Pike is resisting. Then Talosians transfer from the Enterprise two women: the first assistant and foreman, in order to continue the further temptation of the captain. However, Pike found that primitive human emotions, such as anger and anger, completely neutralize the ability of Talosians to act on the brain. As a result, he and all three women flee to the surface of the planet.
Talosians stop Pike and his companions before they can teleport to the ship, but the captain refuses to negotiate, threatening to kill themselves and others, but not to comply with the demands of the Talosians. Frightened by the loss of the only source of secondary settlement, the Talosians study the Enterprise and conclude that the human race is too independent to be controlled.
Left with virtually no choice, Talosians liberate people. The first mate and foreman teleport to the ship, Pike stays with Vina for a while, urging her to fly away with him. But Vina cannot leave the planet — the only survivor from a scientific expedition that really crashed on Talos IV, it was terribly crippled. The Talosians restored it, but they never saw people and did not know their physiology, therefore, without a sample they could not restore her previous appearance, and only with the help of illusions she seemed beautiful and healthy. The Talosians show Pike her true appearance, and Vina tells him her story. But even before the captain’s teleportation to the ship, the Talosians return the illusion - Vina is beautiful again, and another figure appeared next to her - Christopher Pike’s illusion.
Reissue for the Fortieth Anniversary of the Series
Although this series was not part of the original series (1966-1969), it was also updated in 2006 and was scheduled for release on April 26, 2008 along with the remaining series of the original series. But at the last moment the episode was postponed, it was later shown on May 2, 2009 to the release of a new film. The series was included in the reissue of Season 3 on DVD.
Changes:
- The new appearance of the Enterprise, made using computer graphics.
- A new version of the launch, when the "camera" outside the ship penetrates the bridge through the dome. The bridge and the characters were recreated in computer graphics, they are replaced by live actors during the first words of Spock .
- Moving stars are visible behind the porthole in the room of Captain Pike.
- New computer images in the scanning scene of the Enterprise memory banks by Talosians. Images of events that occurred after the shooting of the series in 1964, such as Apollo 11 , landing on the moon, were included.
- Captions at the beginning and end are aligned with the rest of the series.
- Scenes were removed in which Spock shows emotions (smiles when he first sees Talosian flowers, and gets scared when the ship is irradiated).
