Biography
The third daughter and fourth child of the King of Italy, Victor Emanuel III and Elena of Montenegro . At baptism, she received the name Giovanna Elizabeth Anthony Roman Maria . From childhood, she was brought up with the aim of concluding a profitable dynastic marriage.
In October 1930, Assisi Giovanna married the king of Bulgaria Boris III . The wedding was held according to the Catholic rite, among the guests was the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini . Two weeks later, an Orthodox wedding ceremony took place in Sofia , which caused a conflict with the Catholic Church. Giovanna accepted the Bulgarian version of her name - Joanna. The couple had two children baptized in the Orthodox Church: Maria Louise (born 1933); Simeon (born 1937), king of Bulgaria Simeon II from 1943 to 1946.
The queen was well received in Bulgaria, partly due to Slavic roots from her mother. She was engaged in charity work, financed a hospital for children. During the war, she obtained visas to allow many Jews to leave for Argentina. Tsar Boris was also less submissive than Hitler had hoped, and after meeting him in Berlin in August 1943, the king became seriously ill and died. The official causes of death were called stress and heart problems, but there were numerous rumors of poisoning. Giovanna's son, Simeon, became the new king during the regency of his uncle Cyril , who was more accommodating.
After the communists came to power in Bulgaria, Cyril was convicted by a “people's court” and subsequently executed. Yoanna and Simeon remained under house arrest in the palace of Vran until 1946, when the new communist government allowed them to leave the country. First they went to Alexandria to the father of Joanna, the former king of Italy Victor Emmanuel, then they moved to Madrid . After the marriage of Simeon to the Spanish noblewoman Margarita Gomez-Asebo and Sehuela in 1962, Joanna went to Estoril , where she lived the rest of her life. In 1993, she paid a visit to Bulgaria to visit her husband’s grave.
She was buried in the church of St. Francis in Assisi , Italy , in the city where she married.
