Geography
It borders with the Bratsk , Ust-Kut , Ust-Ilim and Ust-Udinsky districts. Area - 36 823 kmΒ²
The regional center is located 240 km from Bratsk , 235 km from Ust-Ilimsk , 160 km from Ust-Kut .
Nizhneilimsky district equated to the regions of the Far North .
History
For over a hundred years, the Ilim Province was a populated part of the Baikal region and all of Eastern Siberia . From here came the settlers to develop the annexed Daur lands , to Yakutsk , Okhotsk , to Kamchatka . Ilimsk received prominent travelers, scientists, famous discoverers of new lands.
By order, signed by Emperor Peter I , in September 1725 Vitus Bering and his associates on the Great Kamchatka Expedition arrived in Ilimsk to equip the expedition with food and tools, to replenish the team.
From January 1792 to February 1797, the Russian writer Alexander Radishchev , exiled to Siberia by Empress Catherine II for the book β A Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow β, was serving a reference in Ilimsk.
The founding date of the Nizhneilimsky district should be considered June 28, 1926 , when, according to the Resolution of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, the Irkutsk Province, which became part of the Siberian Territory, was abolished and divided into districts and districts. Nizhneilimsky district with the center in the village of Nizhneilimsk began to be part of the Tulunsky district and was there until 1930 .
In the 1930s , the first detailed exploration and geophysical work at the Korshunovsky iron ore deposit was carried out in the Nizhneilimsky district, and on April 1, 1965, the Korshunovsky mining and processing plant shipped the first tons of iron ore concentrate, and thus became one of the operating mining enterprises of the third metallurgical base of the country.

Natural Resources
The most accessible and developed natural resources of the region are timber and iron ores .
The total timber stock is 313 million cubic meters, the estimated cutting area for the Nizhneilimsky district is 3.5 million cubic meters. Iron ore reserves are high. On the right bank of the Igirma and Ilim rivers there is a unique deposit of quartz sand with unlimited reserves, on the left bank of the Igirma river there is a deposit of dolometized limestone .
Industry
The largest part of the industrial production of the region is accounted for by the mining (63%) and wood-processing (35.6%) industries. Iron ore concentrate, sawn timber, molding sand are produced in the Nizhneilimky district. The main enterprises of the region are the Korshunov Mining and Processing Plant and the Russian-Japanese joint venture Igirma-Tairiku.
Social Sector
The district has music schools, cultural centers, libraries , art schools, cinemas , the State Museum named after academician M. K. Yangel , a local history museum, a modern art gallery, the house museum of M. K. Yangel in the village of Bereznyaki , the Zerkalo Peopleβs Theater .
There are about 30 secondary schools, kindergartens and nurseries, evening mining and metallurgical college, a branch of the Irkutsk Polytechnic University , vocational and technical lyceum No. 33, children's clubs.
There is a sports salon "Miner", a beautiful swimming pool with a 50-meter track, a sports and fitness complex "Youth", sports clubs in boxing , football , hockey , and eastern wrestling.
In 1979, Zheleznogorsk-Ilimsky, Nizhneilimsky district, became a sister city of the Japanese city ββof Sakata .
