Philip III was the second son of Count Louis d'Evreux of France and Margarita d'Artois , daughter of the lord Conch Philippe d'Artois . After the death of his father in 1319, his possessions were divided between two sons. The eldest of the sons, Carl , received the county of Etampes , and the youngest, Philip, inherited the counties of Evreux and Longville.

In 1328, the king of France and Navarre, Charles IV the Beautiful , died. The new king of France was elected by his cousin, Philip VI de Valois . However, the assembly of the Navarra nobility refused to recognize King Philip VI. Jeanne , daughter of King Louis X the Grumpy , who was removed after the death of her father in 1316 from the rights to the French throne [1] , and her husband Philippe d'Evreux, recognized her queen. March 5, 1329, Philip and Jeanne in the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Real in Pamplona were crowned bishop of Pamplona Arnaldo de Barbazan as king and queen of Navarre. Thus, the kingdom of Navarre became independent again. King of France Philip VI recognized this election, but in 1335, Philippe and Jeanne were forced to relinquish the rights to the French counties of Champagne and Brie , annexed to the domain of the king of France. In exchange for the agreement concluded on March 14, 1336, the counties of Angouleme and Morten (elevated to peer status), received by him in 1318 as a dowry of his wife, as well as Benon castles in Onis and Fontenay-le-Abattu in Poitou , were finally assigned to Philip.

At the same time, Philip maintained good relations with his cousin and overlord in French possessions, King of France Philip VI. In 1328, Philippe d'Evreux took part in the campaign of Philip VI to Flanders against the rebel Flemings. On August 23, he commanded the fifth line of the French army at the Battle of Kassel . After the suppression of the uprising, Philippe d'Evreux returned to Navarre. However, he soon went to Paris. He liked to be at the French court much more than in Navarre, because of which the importance of the local nobility increased in Navarre.

In 1329, Philip accompanied the king to Amiens , where King Edward III of England brought homage to Guyenne .

In 1331, Philippe became a member of the council of the king of France.

In 1335, Philip fought against King Aragon Pedro IV , but in the end a peace was concluded between the kings, sealed by the marriage of Pedro and one of Philip's daughters.

In March 1336, Philip accompanied the King of France to Avignon to Pope Benedict XII , where it was decided to organize a crusade to recapture the Kingdom of Jerusalem . However, because of the start of the Hundred Years War, the crusade did not take place.

After the start of the Hundred Years War, Philip participated in the conflict on the side of France. In the fall of 1339, he defended the Cambrai besieged by the English army. In 1340, Philip captured Thun L'Eveque, after which he came to the aid of the besieged Tournai .

In 1342, Philip at the call of the King of Castile and Leon Alfonso XI went to Spain to take part in the Reconquista . He equipped a fleet in Normandy , which brought knights from France, Gascony and Navarre to Granada . In 1343, Philip took part in the siege of Algeciras , but received a serious wound, from which he died in Jerez on September 23 .

Notes

  1. ↑ Jeanne's mother, Margarita of Burgundy , was convicted of adultery, so there were doubts that it was Louis who was Jeanne's father. However, Jeanne's rights to the Navarran crown, as well as to the counties of Champagne and Brie, were recognized, although until the death of Charles IV these possessions remained in the hands of the kings of France.
