Terminology

Apparently, one of the first to use the concept of “philatelic Gagarinian” was E. P. Sashenkov. In particular, in his fundamental work on space philately “Postal souvenirs of the space age”. He devoted a separate chapter to this topic “The Philatelic Gagarinian” [1] .

Description

Since 1961, stamps and other collectible materials on this topic have appeared many times both in the USSR and in other countries of the world, including modern Russia .

The bulk of philatelic materials directly dedicated to Yu. A. Gagarin is in the Soviet Union. The postal departments of other socialist countries also devoted their philatelic issues to these topics quite often. Stamps with the image of Gagarin were also printed in so many countries that do not belong to the socialist camp .

Russian Editions

In 2001, the Marka Publishing and Trading Center (ITC) and the Russian Post prepared and put into circulation a couple of two stamps to mark the 40th anniversary of the first manned space flight. They were printed in vintage sheets of 18 couplings and in small sheets of three couplings [2] . However, later this issue was at the center of the scandal.

In 2009, a Russian brand dedicated to the 75th birthday of Yuri Gagarin was released. Her face value is 10 rubles . On the stamp was an unpublished photograph of an astronaut dated April 12, 1961 and taken immediately after the Vostok spaceship landed (photographer V. Smirnov ). Three special cancellations and an envelope of the first day were timed to the same event [3] .

2001 Hitch Scandal

The two-stamp coupling of Russia in 2001 caused a scandal and a lawsuit . On the right mark of the hitch, Yu. A. Gagarin was imprinted, reporting on the successful completion of a space flight [2] . As it turned out, the artist A. Kernosov used the photograph taken in 1961 by TASS correspondent Valery Gende-Rot . After the stamps were released, his daughter Tatyana Martynova sued the Marka Research and Development Center and won the case. In 2003, by the decision of the court, the “Marka” ITC paid the heiress of the photojournalist 150 thousand rubles [4] .

Other Country Editions

Beginning in April 1961, postage stamps, first-day envelopes and other philatelic materials appeared repeatedly in the world, and commemorative special cancellations were made. The first foreign postal issue was two Czechoslovakian stamps with inscriptions in the Czech language : “USSR Knight over the Universe 12.IV.1961” - in the first miniature and “Soviet Man in Space 12.IV.1961” - in the second ( Sc # 1042, 1043 ) For them, a drawing of stamps depicting a man hovering in space in a spacesuit was put in circulation shortly before April 12, 1961 and had the inscription: “Man conquering space”. The new "Gagarin" miniatures, issued on April 13, differed from the previous "anonymous" brands in color and denominations [5] [6] .

Gagarin and his flight into space are also devoted to the brands of Albania (1961; a series of three brands), Belarus (2011), Hungary (1962), Ajman (1968) and many other countries.

Philatelic editions

A. Mil 's book “You Know What a Guy He Was ... Postage Stamps , Envelopes , Special Cancellations ” (1984) [12]

Gagarin's theme is invariably present in publications on space philately (astrophilatelia). For example, the book of Yevgeny Sashenkov “Postal souvenirs of the space era” (1969), with a separate chapter “The Philatelic Gagarinian”, was dedicated to the memory of Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin, and the first cosmonaut himself managed to write a preface to the book [13] .

In 1984, the Soviet Union published the book “You Know What a Guy He Was ... Postage Stamps, Envelopes , Special Cancellations”, specially dedicated to the Gagarin theme in philately. Its author is Alexander Mil . The book was opened with an introductory article by the second Soviet cosmonaut German Titov [12] .

Among modern Russian publications, the illustrated catalog “Yu. Gagarin on postage stamps ”(2005), compiled by Yuri Kvasnikov [14] . It systematized information on 386 postage stamps from 85 countries that went to mark the world's first manned space flight [15] .

In the same year, two collections of articles “The Philatelic Gagarinian” appeared, prepared and published by the Nizhny Novgorod collector Konstantin Zaitsev [16] [17] [18] .

In Italy, in 2004, Enrico Grassani's book ( Italian: Enrico Grassani ) was published entitled Yuri Gagarin ei primi voli spaziali sovietici (Yuri Gagarin and the First Soviet Space Flight) [19] , which, in addition to historical materials, contains philatelic a section describing postage stamps, envelopes of the first day and special cancellation of the time [20] .
