Biography

He graduated from the Toronto School of Medicine in 1870 , then entered McGill University , where in 1872 he received a doctorate in medicine.

He completed an internship in clinics and laboratories in London , Berlin , Leipzig and Vienna , studying with , Rudolf Virchow , Ludwig Traube , Friedrich Frereks , Bernhard von Langenbek , F. Gebra, Karl von Rokytansky and others.

Returning to Canada, Osler became a professor at the Department of Internal Medicine at McGill University (1875).

One of the founders of the Johns Hopkins Hospital (1889).

Scientific activity

Osler owns many discoveries and important observations. In 1873 he described platelets in detail, in 1876 - a new type of trematode , the causative agent of filariasis , later called Osler's filaria, in 1885 - described the clinical picture of subacute septic endocarditis and indicated, in particular, the appearance of painful red nodules on the skin of the fingers . now called the "Osler symptom" is a sign of microembolism, in 1892 he described attacks of bronchial asthma caused by aspiration of the acidic contents of the stomach into the respiratory tract. In the same year, he studied a condition called irritable bowel syndrome today and described it as "mucous colitis ." For his services to science, William Osler was awarded the title of Baronet in 1911. In 1913, he gave Sillimanov lectures .

Osler's aphorism is widely known:

 A novice doctor prescribes twenty medicines for each disease; an experienced doctor - one medicine for twenty diseases

Memory

The book The Life of Sir William Osler [5], written by the American neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1926 and is one of the best medical biographies of the 20th century.
