Born in a family of artists. He worked with his sons Marco, Luke and Giovanni. He was the official artist of the Doge Andrea Dandolo . Perhaps he was a teacher of Lorenzo Veneziano . The first known work was signed by Paolo Veneziano under 1333, the last - together with his son Giovanni under 1358 [2] .

The work of Paolo Veneziano bears both obvious features inherited from Byzantine painting, including a golden background, and the color variety characteristic of modern (for example, Giotto ) and later pictorial Italian schools [2] .

Paolo Veneziano is credited with painting "The Coronation of the Madonna" ( 1324 ), located in the National Gallery in Washington . Authorship is disputed by some researchers and cannot be considered proven.

The first work reliably owned by the artist is the polyptych “Assumption of the Virgin” ( 1333 , Vicenza Museum), made in a style very similar to the Byzantine one.

After 1340, the artist's style takes on the features of Gothic . It was at this time that he and his sons Luke and Giovanni took part in the creation, by order of Doge Andrea Dandolo, of the “Everyday Altar” ( 1345 ), which closed the precious Pala d'Oro in St. Mark's Cathedral , which was opened only during church holidays. [3]

After 1347, Paolo Veneziano maintains his own art workshop. The main products of the workshop were mosaics (including in the baptistery of St. Mark's Cathedral), altars and polyptychs. The artist's last signed work is the Coronation Altar ( 1358 , Frick Collection , New York).
