Biography
In his youth he worked as a cartographer in Lisbon . It is possible that he informed his brother about the possibility of a western route to India. While Christopher tried to convince the feasibility of his project of the Catholic kings of Spain, Bartolomeo was bothering about the same in France .
Upon learning of the discoveries of his brother, Bartolomeo in 1493 hurried to meet him in Spain, but Christopher had already sailed on his second voyage. With state aid, he followed him to Espanyol and served there as governor for six and a half years (1494-1500).
When the royal prosecutor Francisco de Bobadilla accused Columbus of embezzlement , Bartolomeo together with him was imprisoned in chains. Later he accompanied his brother on his last journey to the shores of the New World .
Local population of Hispaniola during the governorship period
In the 1960s in Spain, Karl Sawyer discovered in the archives a historical document written by Bartolomeo, brother of Columbus, who was at that time governor of Hispaniola Island. The document states that in 1496 there were 1 million 100 thousand Indians on the island. However, the Spaniards owned half of the island and did not include women and children. From this we can conclude that there were at least 3 million Indians only in the territory controlled by the Spaniards. Already around 1526, the Spaniards counted only 11 thousand Indians, despite the fact that the Spanish possessions expanded.
