Opuk (cape)

Opuk ( Ukrainian Opuk , Crimean-Tat. Opuk, Opuk ) - a cape in the Crimea , located on the Black Sea coast of the Kerch Peninsula , Leninsky district of the republic, near the village of Yakovenkovo .

The highest point of the cape is the mountain of the same name .

Four kilometers from the coast, a group of four islands rises above the sea - the Rocks-ships (Elken-Kaya), which once connected to the coast. The highest cliff rises above the sea by more than 20 meters.

The territory of the cape and Mount Opuk, as well as the adjacent marine area, are a nature reserve . The Opuksky reserve is a nesting site for rare birds such as the pink starling , owl , laughter , peregrine falcon , cormorant , and julan .

The height of Mount Opuk is 183 m. In its coastal cliff there are deep niches and grottoes. The mountain is composed of reef limestones.

The coast of Cape Opuk is the furthest range of the 810th Marine Brigade . Three kilometers west of the cape, the territory of the air defense forces ground begins. It was from there that a missile was launched that shot down a Tu-154M plane of the Siberia Airlines on October 4, 2001, during the Ukrainian and Russian military training firing at the training ground of the 31st Research Center of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation [2] .
