Personal life
Greg’s father, Tom, is a Ukrainian born in Germany ; mother, Helen, was born in England . Greg himself was born in Quebec ( Canada ). In children and youth tournaments represented Canada; six-time champion of Canada in various age categories. In 1991, he won the Wimbledon tournament for youth couples with Karim Alami ( Morocco ). They also won their first ATP Challenger (in Newcastle ) and ATR ( Newport , USA ) tournaments under the Canadian flag. In 1995, he accepted British citizenship. Married since 1999 ; daughter, Scarlett Mary, was born in 2006 .
Professional career
During his professional career, he won 15 tournaments in the ATP series, including the 1999 Grand Slam Cup . In addition, the most successful for Greg was 1997 , when he reached the final of the US Open (lost to Patrick Rafter in four sets) and the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon tournament . In the same year, Rusedski was named the BBC Corporation athlete of the year. [2] He also won three tournaments in the men's doubles category, including one in London , with his regular rival in the fight for the first British racket title Tim Hanman .
Twice, in 1996 and 2000 , represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games; the best achievement - 1/8 finals at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta (lost to future silver medalist Sergio Bruger ). In the Davis Cup, he played 43 matches for the UK national team : 20 wins, 10 losses in the single category and 10 wins, 3 losses in pairs. The last match of his career for Greg was the victory in April 2007, paired with Andy Murray over the Dutch couple, which provided the British national team with a general victory in the match.
In January 2009, Rusedski announced his intention to return to professional tennis, [3] however, since the moment of this statement he has not participated in any tournament.
Rusedski successfully performed only on hard surfaces - grass, hard and carpet; much weaker - on the ground, where he could not compete with the world's leading tennis players.
