Ivan Fedorovich Tutolmin

With the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish war, he was appointed commander of the 1st Brigade of the Caucasian Cossack Division (enlisted in the Terek Cossack Army ) and was in business at the European Theater of War. For the difference, he was promoted to major general on October 2, 1877, and on October 8 of that year was awarded the Order of St. George 4th degree

Consisting of errands under His Imperial Highness Commander-in-Chief of the Operating Army, in 1877, with. Gradeshti, near Nikopol, being surrounded by a powerful enemy at night, not only repulsed all the attacks of the Turks, but defeated them and forced them to retreat, with which he took three banners, one gun and repelled the convoy.

The village of Gradeshti was a junction of roads to Plevna , Nikopol , Rakhovo - Viddina. It was located in a very convenient place for defense: on the western side - the swampy floodplain of the Vid river, on the eastern side - almost steep slopes of the mountains. Each courtyard in it was surrounded by high ramparts with thorny shrubs and deep canals. Tutolmin decided to attack Gradesti from the east with two hundred Cossacks of the Vladikavkaz regiment, reinforced with a horse-mountain battery, and with the south secretly approaching the 1st, 2nd and 5th hundreds of the 2nd Kuban regiment.

The Kuban fought in a hurry, stealthily speaking in position, hiding behind the hills and shrubs. By order of the brigade commander Tutolmin, Vladikavkaz fired at a Turkish position with a horse-mountain battery, while the 2nd hundred came down from the mountains. The Turks, unable to withstand the shelling and the onslaught of the 2nd hundred, began to retreat northwest along the village. They were pursued by the 2nd hundred Kuban along with the 5th hundred Vladikavkaz. The battle lasted more than three hours. Losses of the Cossacks amounted to 13 people killed and 14 wounded [1] .

On July 3, Russian units occupied the advanced fortresses of Nikopol . About 23 hours, already in the dark, the Turks attempted a breakthrough. Their vanguard of six companies attacked the positions of the Caucasian brigade of General Tutolmin. Cossacks skillfully defended themselves. As a result, as Tutolmin informed his superiors:

The hastened Cossacks managed not only to repulse the Turks' repeated attack twice, but also to force them to retreat most of them to Nikopol, and to shove the smaller ones back to Vid, where then they came to an end at dawn ... two fresh Caucasian hundreds. [2]

October 25, 1877 was awarded a gold saber with the inscription "For courage" [3] . Also for the campaign against the Turks in the same year he received the Order of St. Vladimir 3rd degree (swords for this order were granted in 1880).

At the end of the war, in 1879, Tutolmin was appointed general for special assignments under the inspector general of the cavalry , in 1880 he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav 1st degree; in 1882 he was appointed head of the Officer Cavalry School and continued to be the educator of Grand Duke Pyotr Nikolayevich. In 1883 he was awarded the Order of St. Anna of the 1st degree.

In 1885, Tutolmin was given command of the 1st Caucasian Cossack Division and in 1886 he was promoted to lieutenant general . In 1893 he was appointed head of the Caucasian Cavalry Division ; after that, in 1895 he headed the 5th Army Corps , which, however, was commanded for about a year, and in 1896 was appointed assistant to the Inspector General of the Cavalry.

In 1901, the cavalry general Tutolmin was appointed a member of the Military Council .

In 1907 he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Lovchi (Bulgaria). [four]
