Biography
Born February 8, 1936 in the city of Jelgava , Latvia in the family of a telephone fitter. He graduated from 1 high school in the city of Dobele . He studied at the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of Latvia ( 1955 - 1957 ).
Collaborated in Riga newspapers, journalist and editor. At the Riga film studio he began with newsreels ( 1961 - 1962 ), then an assistant director ( 1963 - 1965 ).
He wrote scripts and narration for documentaries. Director's debut - television documentary "Wings of Urban Roads" ( 1962 ). For the film "Report of the Year" ( 1965 ) was awarded the State Prize of the Latvian SSR. He wrote scripts for almost all of his films. For greater artistic expressiveness of the tapes, he used stage plays in documentary filmmaking and documentary filming in feature films (“ An Apple in the River ”). The directorial work of 1987, Amber Lett-87 and Happening with MZ, is filled with genuine irony. In the early 90's he shot two films about the Livs .
Winner of the All-Union Film Festival and winner of the award of the national film festival " Big Kristap " for the film " Malchugan " ( 1977 ). In 1984 he published the book "Year of the Boy" about the work on this film.
The author of collections of humorous stories and short stories. Published in newspapers and magazines. Honored Artist of the Latvian SSR ( 1987 ). [one]
For many years of contribution to the development of national art, he was awarded the highest Latvian award - the Order of Three Stars of the IV degree ( 2003 ).
